Will looked up at her with a frown. “Really? You sound surprised that someone would think I’m better than another guy.”

The incredulity she’d felt at what he’d said faded away. “That’s not what I meant. I was just surprised that it took her this long to realize how great you are. I mean, you’ve been broken up for months now. What made her realize it just now?”

“She said that the new guy wasn’t respectful of her.”

“Of Daphne?”

“No, she said he wasn’t respectful of her or Daphne’s parents.”

“So you treated the parents and grandparents better than the new guy?”

“Yep.”

“Well, that’s not a surprise,” Janessa said. “You were raised to be respectful.”

“She didn’t seem as concerned about how the guy treated Daphne.”

“So, was she trying to talk you into getting back together with her?”

“There were some not-so-subtle hints,” Will said. “But that ship has well and truly sailed. I’m not interested in getting back together.”

“Really?” Janessa was a bit surprised at that. For some reason, she had thought he’d want at the chance.

Will frowned. “Daphne made it pretty clear we were done forever. I’m not a glutton for punishment, nor am I so desperate as to beg for a second chance. She’s moved on, and so have I.”

“Good. She doesn’t deserve another chance with you.”

“I don’t know about that,” Will said. “But what I do know is that it wouldn’t be good for either of us.”

Janessa was glad to hear that. After witnessing Jay constantly going back to Casey, Janessa wasn’t sure that she could hold her tongue if Will got back together with Daphne. She knew it wasn’t her place to interfere, but it would bereallyhard not to.

“Well, I hope you stay strong if she ever does come back.”

“You don’t have to worry about that.”

“Good.” She pushed the button on her key fob to unlock the door. “Guess I’d better head home. I’m going to try to get to bed early tonight after this lovely day.”

“No more late-night book reading?”

“I told Denise that she’s only allowed to recommend a book to me on a Friday, so I’m not tempted to stay up late on a work night.”

“Smart.”

“I thought so.” She opened her door, then slid behind the wheel. “Give me a call if…”

Janessa paused, not sure why she was asking him to call her.

“If?” Will prompted.

“If you… uh… get beaten up by the kid’s dad. You might need to be patched up.”

Will chuckled. “I’ll definitely let you know.”

“Have a good night.”

“You too.” He closed her door for her, then stepped back and gave her a wave.

Janessa started up the engine, then pulled out of her parking spot. She glanced in her rear-view mirror as she drove toward the exit of the lot and saw that Will was headed to his car.
