“Fine.”

Will broke off a piece of the muffin and popped it into his mouth. He’d never had issues talking with Janessa before, but ever since she’d gotten so angry with him and Jay, he had no idea what to say. The last thing he wanted to do was tick her off further.

“Welcome, everyone,” Evelyn said. “Grab a cup of coffee and a muffin and find a seat so we can get started.”

There was a bit of conversation, but as soon as everyone was seated, the room fell silent.

“I’m so glad that you’re all here to help plan the Fall Dinner,” the woman said with a smile. Evelyn was one of the people who liked to be involved in everything at the church, so it wasn’t a big surprise that she was leading the committee for this.

For the next little while, Evelyn laid out what she envisioned for the dinner. It was more than just a simple dinner. They used it as community outreach, as well as a fundraising effort for a variety of different causes. In addition to the dinner, there would be a program.

Will wasn’t sure where exactly they’d find a spot for him. Definitely not in the kitchen. At least not if they wanted people to actually eat the food. Maybe he could be in charge of the teens who usually helped serve the food. He knew most of them since they all ended up in his class at the high school at one point or another.

Evelyn shared the different areas of the dinner she’d be assigning people to, though she made it clear that there might be some shuffling around as time went on. While people had questions, Will was content to just listen. No one there probably expected him to get too involved in the discussion.

There were times he wished he could be a little more vocal, but that had never been his personality. Reese and Isaac didn’t have the same issue, which was probably why his mom volunteered him for things like this and not them. It was unlikely he’d say or do anything that would reflect badly on her or his dad.

“Janessa, why don’t you and Will work together to come up with some ideas for the program?” Evelyn said.

Will glanced at Janessa in time to see her nod. That surprised him more than a little. He would have thought she’d rather be with someone else because she knew he wasn’t exactly the most imaginative person.

“You want us to have some program ideas by the next meeting?” Janessa asked.

“Yes. That would be great.”

“We can do that.” She looked at him. “Right, Will?”

“Yep.”

“Perfect.” Evelyn made a note in her notebook, then moved on to the next assignment.

By the time she was done, everyone in the room had been assigned to a sub-committee. So, if anyone else had been there under duress and had hoped they’d have too many people, like Will had, they were probably disappointed.

“This has been great,” Evelyn said. “Thank you so much for being willing to use your time and talents to help with this. I look forward to seeing what we come up with. Does it work for everyone to meet again next Monday at the same time?”

No one seemed to have any issues, so Evelyn closed the meeting with prayer and dismissed them. No one rushed off, with several returning to the coffee urn to refill their cups.

“Do you want to come by the house to talk about the program?” Janessa asked as Will got to his feet.

He stilled for a moment. “You want to meet to come up with ideas?”

“Well, sure,” she said with a frown. “How else are we supposed to do what Evelyn asked us to?”

“Oh. I just thought you’d rather come up with the ideas by yourself.”

“Do you not want to help with this?” Janessa asked. “I can let Evelyn know she needs to switch you to a different group.”

“No. I’m good. Let me know when you want to meet.”

“Probably Friday evening would be best, since neither of us has to work the next day. Unless you have other plans.”

Will shook his head. “Friday is fine.”

“Okay. See you then.”

“Yep. Have a good rest of your evening.”

“You too.”
