Even as the thought crossed his mind, Will was certain that he hadn’t. And that made him feel a bit sad.

“How much longer do we have to do this?” Janessa asked.

Will glanced over to where Jay and Misha were still going strong on the elliptical. Both of them were smiling as they talked. “I guess that depends on if we’re doing our own thing or waiting for your brother and Misha.”

“Definitely doing our own thing.” Janessa reached out and pushed the button to stop her treadmill. “Let’s stretch.”

Misha and Jay joined them almost immediately, then they cleaned all the machines they’d used before they changed and left. It wouldn’t be long before the Friday night workouts would be a thing of the past, since basketball season was going into full swing. There would be games on Friday nights now, as well as on Saturday.

Will dropped Janessa off at home, sad that the evening was at an end. However, there was no reason to extend their time together. It was just that he felt happier… lighter… when he was with Janessa. And the others, too, of course.

The silence of his apartment weighed on him, so as soon as he walked in, he turned the television on, just so there was noise. Before jumping in the shower, Will took some time to trim his beard to the length he preferred. He hadn’t grown a beard previously because Daphne had hated the idea. But after the breakup, he’d just kind of gotten in the habit of maintaining a bit of stubble.

He still wasn’t sure if he would keep it, but for now, it was a change that he didn’t mind.

The next evening, Will found himself seated beside Janessa at the basketball game once again. As usual, being with her and the others was a blast, and even seeing Daphne there with her new boyfriend didn’t dim his happiness.

Maybe he was truly over her and the way their relationship had ended. Even remembering the words she’d flung at him that last day didn’t hurt as bad as they once had. There were times when he struggled with being alone, but he had no desire to go back to when he’d still been with Daphne.

He was ready to move forward.

After the game—this time a win—Will walked out with the others, then veered off to where he’d parked.

“Will! Hey, bro!”

Will turned to see Jackson jogging toward him. “What’s up?”

“I need a huge favor.”

Will frowned. Do a favor for Jackson? He wasn’t sure that would be a good thing. “What’s that?”

“I need you to come on a date with me.”

“Sorry, but you’re not my type.”

Jackson laughed. “No. Not on a date withme. A double date.”

“Hmmm.”

“Don’t say no, please,” Jackson said. “I met this girl on a dating app, and she seems really great.”

“So what’s the catch?”

“She’ll only go out with me this first time if she can bring her friend along,” Jackson said. “So I need to find someone to make it a double date.”

Will crossed his arms and shifted his weight to one leg. “I’m not really looking to date at the moment.”

“It’s not that you have to actually date her friend. It’s just for this first date. Once she’s comfortable with me, we can go on dates on our own.”

“Why didn’t you ask Wade?”

Jackson rubbed the back of his neck. “I did.”

Will laughed. “No surprise he said no.”

“But you’re not going to let me down, right?”

“Jackson…” Will wasn’t a fan of blind dates, even if they had no future. However, it might be an opportunity to test the waters, so to speak. “When is the date?”
