Will picked up his empty cup and the wrapper from his muffin and carried them to the garbage can that had been set out. He said goodnight to Miss Eva, then thanked Evelyn for her work before leaving the room.

Blowing out a breath, he pulled his phone out and sent Jay another text.

I think body snatchers got to your sister.

Jay:LOL why would you say that?

Evelyn paired us together to work on the program for the dinner, and Janessa agreed!

Jay:I don’t think she hates you.

Well, I guess we’ll find out. I’m supposed to meet with her on Friday night at the house.

Jay:Maybe I’ll invite myself, Peyton, and Misha over that evening as well. Have a pizza night.

Will pushed open the front door with his shoulder and jogged down the steps to the sidewalk that led to the parking lot, waiting until he neared his car to tap out a reply.

I wouldn’t object to that.

Jay:We can all give ideas for the program.

Will wasn’t sure how Janessa would feel about that, but he figured he’d better come up with a few ideas of his own before Friday. There was no way he wanted Janessa to feel like he wasn’t pulling his weight in their little duo.

If this situation would help to get things back to normal between them, then he’d do what he could to promote that. And hopefully, she and Jay could get things sorted out as well. It was way past due for everything to be the way it had been before Jay had found out about Peyton.

CHAPTER THREE

Charli pulled a couple of two-liter bottles of soda from the fridge and set them on the counter. “I can’t believe that you invited everyone for dinner.”

“Actually, I didn’t,” Janessa said.

“That’s not what Jay told me when he phoned to ask what type of pizza we wanted him to order.”

“Technically, I invited Will to come over to discuss stuff for the Fall Dinner program,” Janessa said. “He mentioned it to Jay, andJayinvited himself, Peyton, Misha and Ciara along.”

“First, I still can’t believe that you decided to join a committee at church without some sort of incentive,” Charli said as she stacked some paper plates on the counter.

Janessa shrugged. “I was bored and decided it might be a good use of my time.”

“I’m sure it will be,” Charli agreed.

“And second?” Janessa prompted.

“Second?”

“You saidfirst, so I assumed there must be a second.”

“Oh. Yeah. Second… I can’t believe that you’re willingly spending time with Will.”

“I didn’t have a choice, really. Or at least not without making things awkward at the meeting. However, it seems that perhaps Will doesn’t want to spend time alone with me,” Janessa said. “I’m guessing he asked Jay to come along.”

“Well, you can’t exactly blame the guy. You’ve been rather frosty toward both of them.”

Janessa didn’t respond to that. It was an old discussion that she had no intention of getting dragged into again. In her own way, she was trying to unthaw things. Whether or not her plan would actually work remained to be seen. If she could just keep her own emotions under control, there was hope.

But no matter how much she might want things to go back to normal, things had changed. Janessa knew she needed to accept that. It was just taking time.

When the doorbell rang, Janessa glanced up from the glasses she was lining up on the counter next to the soda, but she didn’t move to go to the door. As usual, Layla was happy to answer it, especially since she knew that Peyton was coming.
