Layla came skipping into the kitchen then, her hair bouncing in ponytails. “Hey Will! Why are you here?”

“I came to give Janessa something.”

“Ooooh.” Her eyes got wide. “Is it a surprise?”

“She’s not expecting it, so I guess it will be a surprise.”

“That’s exciting!”

Will wasn’t sure it was exciting, and he felt a bit bad about the fact that Layla was probably going to be very disappointed when she found out it was soup.

When the front door opened, Layla darted out of the kitchen. “Auntie Nessa! Will brought you something!”

“What?”

“Will is here, and he said he brought you something.”

Will had a flutter of nerves as he stood up, waiting for Janessa to appear in the doorway. When she did, her brow was furrowed as she looked at him.

“Did I forget something last night?” She set her purse down on the counter by the kitchen entrance, then ventured further into the room.

“Nope. I just felt bad that you weren’t feeling well, and I brought you something to feel better. Mom’s chicken noodle soup.”

Janessa’s eyes widened. “You brought me chicken noodle soup?”

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Janessa wasn’t sure how to feel about Will’s presence in their kitchen. Or how to feel about his reason for coming.

He’d brought her chicken noodle soup. So she’d feel better.

His actions touched her in a way she didn’t want to be touched. At least not by something Will had done. For her, it further complicated already complicated emotions in her heart.

“Yep. My mom’s chicken noodle soup is amazing, and it’s known to cure whatever ails you.”

“You asked your mom for her soup?”

Will smiled at her, his eyes sparkling. “I certainly did, and she was happy to give me some. It’s frozen, so if you don’t want to eat it right away, you can keep it frozen until you want it. From what I smell at the moment, I’d say that Charli already has supper underway, so you probably won’t want it tonight.”

“I’m fine with you having soup tonight instead of what I made,” Charli said, her brows lifting.

“What did you make?”

“Chicken pasta casserole. Kind of like chicken noodle soup in casserole form.”

“I think I’ll have the soup,” Janessa said, wanting Will to know she appreciated his concern for her.

Charli turned to Will. “Why don’t you stay for supper? There’s plenty, and Aria and Gareth will be here too.”

Will glanced at Janessa. “Is that okay?”

Though she wasn’t sure that spending more time with him was a good idea in her current mindset, Janessa said, “Sure. That’s fine.”

Will’s smile widened at her words. “I bet the casserole will be better than the burger I was planning to get.”

When Aria and Gareth arrived a few minutes later, they appeared surprised to see Will. However, Gareth quickly fell into a conversation with him, while Aria went upstairs to change.

Seeing him there in her kitchen, standing with his hands in the pockets of his jeans, completely at ease as he chatted with Gareth, created a longing within her that Janessa couldn’t squash. It was a longing for him to be a part of her life like that on a daily basis. She wanted him to be there for her the way Gareth was there for Aria.
