“You asked him?”

“Yep. I asked him if he was going on a second date, and he said no.”

It didn’t matter, Janessa reminded herself. Even if he wasn’t going to date this particular woman, there would come a point when he would start to date someone.

“I think he might be interested in someone specific,” Charli mused.

Janessa wasn’t keen to have this discussion, but she knew her sister well enough to understand that shutting it down would never work. “Not too surprising. Will strikes me as a guy who’d want to date someone he was at least acquainted with.”

Charli laughed. “Jackson is probably the only person I know who likes going on dates with women he doesn’t know.”

“He has no choice. All the women he knows either turned him down or dumped him after they’d been dating for a bit.”

“This is true. Do you have any idea who Will might be interested in?”

Janessa glanced at Charli. “Not a clue. I haven’t really thought much about it since I didn’t realize he was ready to date again.”

“I hadn’t really thought much about it either, until last night and then again tonight.”

“Hmmm?” Janessa rinsed the pot, then dried it before putting it into the drawer. She didn’t want to have this conversation with Charli, so she kind of half-tuned her out.

“Are you ignoring me?” Charli asked.

“No?”

Charli let out a huff of laughter. “You don’t know if you’re ignoring me?”

“If I was ignoring you, I wouldn’t be responding to you,” Janessa said as she picked up the empty casserole dish and began to wash it.

“I still feel like you’re not really paying attention to what I’m saying,” Charli told her.

“I’m paying plenty of attention.”

“I really don’t think you are.”

“What are you two squabbling over?” Gareth asked as he came into the kitchen with Aria.

Janessa decided to let Charli answer that question since she was the one pressing this particular conversation. Maybe Gareth and Aria would enjoy it more, and Janessa could ignore all three of them, rather than having to pay attention.

“I’m trying to get Nessa to understand that Will is interested in her,” Charli said.

The dish Janessa was washing slipped back down in the water, creating a small tidal wave, mirroring the effect Charli’s words had created inside her. Without looking at her siblings or best friend, she grabbed a towel to mop up the water that had splashed out over the counter.

“You think Will is interested in Janessa… romantically?” Gareth asked.

Janessa might have expected him to sound doubtful, but instead, he sounded like he wanted clarification of what Charli was saying. She wanted that, too.

Or maybe she didn’t…

“Why do you think that?” Aria asked. “He just went out on a date. Why would he do that if he was interested in Janessa?”

“When I talked to Jackson last night, he said that Will had told him he wasn’t interested in going on another date with the woman,” Gareth said.

“He told me that last night too when he texted me to make sure Janessa was okay,” Charli added. “And then he showed up tonight with soup for her.”

“And stayed for dinner, choosing to sit next to her,” Aria mused.

Janessa’s relief at Charli having someone else to talk to was rapidly disappearing. She didn’t want to hear this. She didn’t want to hope that Will might actually have feelings for her because she didn’t want to be tempted.
