The people he’d usually go to for advice were too tied up in the situation. If he had been interested in someone else from the church—someone unrelated to the Halversons—he would have gone to Jay. Maybe even Janessa.

So, who did he go to now?

Certainly not Reese or Isaac. That would be even worse than going to the Halverson siblings.

He’d gotten so lost in his thoughts that he didn’t notice that Janessa and the others had arrived until they were climbing the steps to where he sat. Will scooted further down the row as they filed in next to him.

Gareth led the way, with Aria and Janessa behind him. Charli brought up the rear with Layla, who liked to sit on the outside so she could go down and hang out with Skylar for part of the game.

Though it disappointed Will to not be sitting next to Janessa, he gave Gareth a smile as the man sat down beside him. “How’s it going?”

“Great. How about with you?”

“Pretty good. Glad it’s Friday, even though we’re gearing up for a busy weekend.”

“Are you ready for the dinner?”

“I think so. I’ll be spending tomorrow at the church helping get everything set up for the evening.”

“Are you excited?”

Will shifted to face Gareth more fully. “I wouldn’t say excited, per se. But I hope it goes well. It’s an important event at the church.”

“Are you expecting a full house?”

“Yep. All the tickets are gone.”

“It’s too bad Mom and Dad aren’t here for it.”

They chatted for a bit about how Gareth’s parents were doing on the medical mission ship, but Will’s attention kept straying to where Janessa sat. She was talking with Charli and Aria, as well as a couple from the church who were sitting in front of them.

Soon, the game started, and all of their attention turned to the court. Donny’s father was still the loudest person in the gym, but he didn’t cross the line of unacceptable behavior. Will noticed a change in Donny’s style of play. Though he still could be a bit of a ball hog, he wasn’t trying to make every play by himself.

With the positive changes in the team, it was no surprise that they were ahead at the half.

“Want anything from the canteen?” Gareth asked once the whistle blew to end the second quarter.

“You don’t have to get me anything,” Will told him. “I can get my own stuff.”

“We’re going, anyway. Tell me what you want.”

Will gave a huff of laughter. “Fine. Just a soda.”

“You sure?”

“Yep. I ate before I came.”

Nodding, Gareth turned to the others to see what they wanted.

“Do you need help?” Charli asked.

“I’m sure we could use an extra set of hands,” Gareth said.

After Gareth, Charli, and Aria had left, Will looked over to see Janessa staring down at her phone. He scooted a little closer to her.

“How’re you feeling?”

She looked up from her phone, flipping it over in her hands. “Better, thanks.”
