The only thing that would absolutely trip her up would be if she let her fear override her judgement.

As she pulled into the parking lot, Janessa drove towards the section where she’d agreed to meet Will. His car was already there, so she pulled in beside him, then got out. Will also got out and came around to meet her at the passenger door of his car.

“Hi.” The grin he gave her was affectionate, and it did funny stuff to her stomach.

“Hi.”

“Ready to go?” He opened the door for her. “I figure we can decide where to eat as we drive.”

“Sounds good to me.” As he drove out of the lot, Janessa said, “Should I duck down until we’re out of town in case someone sees us?”

Will laughed. “Maybe.”

Janessa slid down in her seat. “Hopefully this will work.”

“I’m not sure what would be worse,” Will said. “Someone seeing us in the car together with you sitting up properly, or someone recognizing you while you’re trying to hide.”

“I think that might depend on who sees us.”

“As long as no one thinks I’m kidnapping you,” Will said. “That would lead to some… interesting consequences.”

“I’m not sure why anyone would think that.”

“You know that people don’t need a valid reason for the crazy ideas they come up with. All they need is an excuse to gossip.”

Will wasn’t exactly wrong. “Can you imagine what Jay would say if someone asked him if you’d kidnapped me?”

“If he’s a good older brother, he’ll tell them that I can keep you. I mean, that’s what I’d say if someone said they saw Reese getting kidnapped.”

“I don’t blame you. Probably wouldn’t blame Jay either.”

They both laughed then, and Janessa was glad that they weren’t going down the awkward path she’d feared they would.

“I think you can straighten up now,” Will said. “We’re past the town limits.”

Janessa maneuvered herself back up to sit properly in her seat. “I wonder how long until I get a text from someone asking where I am?”

“Do they tend to keep track of you?” Will asked. “I doubt Reese or Isaac would care about what I’m up to.”

“Yeah, but you don’t live with them. If you lived with them, they’d probably wonder. It’s the only downside to living with my sister and best friend.”

“You haven’t set boundaries with them?”

“Oh sure, I have, but curiosity always wins out.”

“Well, while we wait for the first text, shall we talk about where you want to eat?”

After a brief discussion, they finally decided on a family-style restaurant that served breakfast all day because Will was in the mood for pancakes, and Janessa knew she’d have no trouble finding something she liked there as well. They had just reached the outskirts of Coeur d’Alene when her phone’s text alert sounded.

Charli:Where ya at?

“Which one is it?” Will asked.

“Charli. She’s wondering where I am.”

“What are you going to tell her?”

Janessa shrugged. “The truth. Just not going to mentionwhoI’m with.”
