And when he factored in how their lives had intersected with Alexander’s, Hudson supposed it made sense that Alexander had reacted the way he had.

After three marriages and countless girlfriends, Candace was the woman who seemed to have fully captured Alexander’s heart and attention. Anyone who took care of her or treated her well was a star in the man’s books. Same with anyone who helped any of his three kids when they needed it.

“We just need to solve the thefts, and then Kayleigh can well and truly move forward.”

Caren smiled. “I think you’ve spent more time here than you have anywhere else recently. Even New York.”

Hudson could hardly refute her statement, so he shrugged. “I’ve never been to this location before, and I also haven’t been here this whole time. I’ve taken a couple of trips, and I’ll be leaving soon for another one.”

“Will you be coming back here once that trip is over?”

“Possibly.” Hopefully… “Depends on what transpires while I’m gone.”

Caren didn’t look like she believed anything would keep him from coming back, and it was entirely possible that she was correct.

“Well, if you ever need someone to talk to about any of this, you know how to get hold of me.”

“I certainly do.”

“I’ll leave you to your work,” Caren said as she got to her feet. “You’re welcome to join the meeting with Jenn. She’s supposed to be here around three. We’ll be meeting in Kayleigh’s office.”

Hudson got up and walked her to the door. Then, once she’d left, he returned to the table. He finished the last of his meal while he pretended to consider whether or not he was going to attend the meeting.

He continued to work until a little before three, then he left the suite to head down to Kayleigh’s office. Caren was there already with Kayleigh, and they both greeted him with a smile.

Kayleigh didn’t look as tired as she had that morning, but he suspected that was mainly due to the makeup she’d applied. She’d changed into a navy pantsuit with a white blouse, and her hair was down in soft waves over her shoulders.

He’d met plenty of beautiful women over the years, but there was just something about Kayleigh that made her themostbeautiful. At least in his eyes. The inner joy and warmth she radiated made her glow, which drew him to her like a moth to a flame.

“Busy day so far?” he asked as he stood next to Kayleigh while they waited for Jenn to show.

“Yep, but I’m getting a lot accomplished,” she said. “I’ve managed to get caught up on most of what I missed yesterday.”

Before they could continue their conversation, Andrea appeared with Jenn. Caren moved to greet the woman, and Andrea pulled the door closed behind her as she left them.

“Thank you for joining us again, Jenn,” Caren said as she guided the woman to the table.

Jenn was clearly nervous. “I’m not sure I have anything more to add to what I told you already.”

“That’s fine,” Caren assured. “That’s not why we’ve asked you to meet with us today.”

As she sat down, Jenn cast a worried look in Kayleigh’s direction. Caren and Kayleigh took seats on either side of Jenn at the round table, while Hudson sat across from her.

Hudson had thought that Caren would take the lead in the meeting, but that was not the case.

“I want to thank you for coming forward and sharing the truth with us,” Kayleigh said, giving Jenn a soft smile.

“I wouldn’t have had to do that if I hadn’t lied in the first place.”

“But if a different sort of person had been in your position, they might not have come forward at all.”

“I really am sorry for what happened,” Jenn said, sadness clear on her face, along with exhaustion. “I just…”

Kayleigh reached out and rested her hand on Jenn’s arm. “There’s no need for more apologies. That wasn’t why we brought you here today.”

“It isn’t?” Jenn’s brows pulled together in confusion. “Then why am I here?”

“I want to let you know that we are sorry one of our employees took advantage of your situation to further her own goals. Liz has been fired for her actions. You, however, are not.”
