“You know quite a bit about Mario.”

The elevator doors opened, and Kayleigh stepped in, placing her hand on the door to hold it open. Once Hudson had joined her in the elevator car, Kayleigh released the door, then used a keycard that was attached to a band around her wrist to swipe across an electric pad. After it beeped, she pressed a button.

As the elevator descended, she said, “He likes to talk. He’s very happy in his life, and he loves to share about all of it.”

“Have you met his wife?”

“Yes. She’s very nice.”

“Is it possible that their upcoming change in lifestyle might necessitate an influx of money?”

Kayleigh crossed her arms as she turned to face him. Her perfectly plucked brows drew together over a pair of hazel eyes that were framed by long, dark lashes. Her eyes narrowed at him as her chin lifted. “No. Mario would never do something like that.”

“He has access,” Hudson said. “And possibly a motive.”

“Nope.” Kayleigh looked away from him, her profile showing a stubborn set to her jaw. “That is not who Mario is.”

“You can’t know that for certain. People do strange things sometimes, especially when love is involved.”

“I understand that perhaps you need to be jaded in your line of work,” Kayleigh said, turning her attention to him once again. “But I’m not. Until you have concrete proof that it’s Mario, I refuse to believe that of him.”

Hudson felt a strange stirring of respect for the woman. Most of the people he dealt with went along with his theories or outlook on things, probably because they didn’t want to upset him since he was reporting to headquarters.

Kayleigh seemed more interested in defending the honor of the man who was in charge of security. Perhaps she was right. Perhaps she wasn’t. Only time would tell.

When the elevator came to a gentle stop and the doors whooshed open once again, they stepped out into a sterile-looking hall. The floor there wasn’t carpeted, but instead, it was covered with gray tiles, which matched the gray paint on the wall.

“How many floors down are we?” Hudson asked as they walked along the brightly lit hallway.

“Three. Sublevel one is parking. Sublevel two is housekeeping and the staff breakroom. Sublevel three is security and HR.”

“Does every building on the resort have this many lower levels?”

“No. This main building is the only place with three lower levels. The others have the parking level as well as the underground walkways that connect them for staff convenience.”

“Those are different from the walkways for the guests?”

“Yes. The underground ones are for housekeeping, as well as the room service staff, so they can get to all the hotel buildings without having to go outside. The glass walkways on the third floor are only for the resort guests.”

“What about the cabins and the lodges? How do housekeeping and room service work for them?”

“We have enclosed electrical golf carts that can be used to get between the main building and the smaller guest buildings when necessary.”

They approached a door with a card reader next to it, and Kayleigh used her card again to release the lock. She pulled the door open and held it so he could walk into the room beyond.

The space was large but dimly lit. A couple of the walls had several monitors mounted on them that showed various parts of the resort. There were two circular desks facing the wall, and the men seated at them turned to face him and Kayleigh as the door closed behind them.

“Kayleigh!” A large man with a beaming smile got up and came to where they stood just inside the door.

“Hi, Mario. How are you doing?”

“I’m doing great.”

“And Janie?”

Mario’s expression softened. “She’s doing really well. Now that she’s past the first trimester, the morning sickness has disappeared, and she’s feeling a lot better.”

“I’m so glad to hear that,” Kayleigh said.
