Kayleigh pulled up her messages with Andrea and tapped out a text to ask her to check the schedule for her. The woman replied quickly that boardroom was available. After instructing her to reserve it for Hudson and to make sure that coffee and all that required was available in the room.

“It’s all arranged,” Kayleigh said after thanking Andrea. “Room is yours at three with coffee.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

Hudson set his phone face down on the table. “How was your weekend?”

“It was productive.”

“Not relaxing?”

“Well, a little bit,” she said. “But my weekends are usually tied up with household chores. Laundry. Cleaning the house. All that kind of stuff.”

“I have someone who does that for me,” Hudson said.

“I suppose I could hire someone,” Kayleigh replied. “But I don’t mind doing it. Reminds me that there’s a world outside of my work here at the resort.”

“I do tend to live and breathe my job,” Hudson admitted. “I have no real desire to do my laundry. And don’t even get me started on cleaning my apartment. I mean, I can do it in a pinch, but it’s not my preference.”

“You’re spoiled,” Kayleigh said with a laugh, not even thinking that perhaps she shouldn’t be saying that to the guy who held her future in his hands.

Hudson didn’t seem to take offense since he smiled and shrugged. “That’s probably true.”

The sound of Kayleigh’s phone ringing brought their conversation to an end. Seeing it was Andrea, she knew she couldn’t ignore it. “I’ve got to take this.”

Hudson nodded, then got to his feet. “I’ll leave you to it.”

Kayleigh wished he didn’t have to go, but they both had work waiting. Her job wasn’t to sit around and chat with a man she was finding increasingly attractive.

“Hey, Andrea,” she said as she gave Hudson a wave. “What’s up?”

Keeping the phone pressed to her ear, Kayleigh gathered up her things, then got to her feet. “Okay. I’ll be there in a minute.”

And now it was time to get on with the rest of her day.

Around eleven-thirty, she got a call from Hudson to see if she’d join him for lunch. Kayleigh said yes, because of course she would. The more she was around him, the more information she’d be able to glean.

And hopefully, he’d include her in the meeting with the security people that afternoon. If he didn’t, it would feel like decisions were being made about the resort she managed without her having any participation in them.

Hudson had the right to do that, of course, since he outranked her in Remington Properties. But it was important that people respect her role at the resort. Even him. She’d worked hard for it, and though Kayleigh knew that in some people’s eyes she was too young for the position, she was qualified.

And until these recent events, she’d been doing a good job. There had been no complaints about her work. Unfortunately, she’d never trained as a detective.

Troubleshooting? She could do that. But solving crimes, especially when it came to dealing with someone hacking into the camera surveillance system, was out of her realm of knowledge and experience.

It seemed, however, that Hudson had both the knowledge and the experience. Had he dealt with situations like theirs at other locations? Maybe she’d ask him about that at lunch.

While part of her would like to use the time to learn more about him as a person, she had to remember that they were co-workers having lunch, not friends or a couple on a date.

As noon approached, Kayleigh got up from her desk and, after slipping her phone into her pocket, she left her office.

“I’m off to lunch,” she told Andrea. “I should be back by one, but if I end up being late, you can always reach me by phone.”

“Okay. See you in a bit.”

Kayleigh walked down the hallway, heading toward the restaurant where they were meeting. Hudson had said he’d eaten at each of the restaurants, though his favorite was the Steakhouse, which was where they were going to eat again that day.
