“So you suspect that the harassment might lead in a direction that could cause physical harm?”

“It’s possible,” Kayleigh said.

“We can’t say for sure,” Hudson added. “However, it’s not a chance I’m really keen to take. What we’ve seen so far is that the attacks seem to be moving onto a bigger scale. The thefts were small, relatively speaking. But switching up the orders from the restaurants impacted the resort overall in a much bigger way.”

“What do you think the motive is?” William asked. “If all these incidents are tied together?”

“The one thing each of these events could do is negatively affect the reputation of this resort,” Hudson replied. “Who would want to stay at a place where people think their possessions aren’t safe? The restaurants here have stellar reputations that would have been jeopardized if they hadn’t been able to recover from the order change. Of course, the worst-case scenario would be if someone was hurt or injured on the premises.”

William nodded. “Given that this resort is known as a ski destination, any attack on the ski operation would definitely have a negative impact.”

“Yes, if a lift is sabotaged or something like that, it would make it seem as if the resort doesn’t maintain safety standards.”

“So you’re mainly looking for security for the slopes and the lifts?” William asked.

They spent some time discussing what that might look like, and by the time the meeting was over, Hudson knew that Elkins Security would be a good fit.

By the time the meeting was over, Hudson felt confident about leaving Serenity for a few days. The situation wasn’t settled there yet, so he’d be back, but at least it felt like the addition of guards would prevent anything else from happening while he was away.

Not that he didn’t think Kayleigh would be able to handle anything that might happen. So far, she’d done everything he would have, but he still wanted to be around if anything more developed.

“I’m going to be leaving tonight,” Hudson told Kayleigh after William had left.

“Tonight?”

“Yeah. Alexander is sending a plane for me.”

“Better than flying commercial,” Kayleigh said.

“Yes. It certainly is.”

“I hope it goes well.”

“Me, too.” Hudson glanced at his watch. “I’d better get going. I have to be at the airport in a couple of hours.”

Kayleigh hesitated for a moment, then said, “Will you be coming back here after you’re finished in Scotland?”

“I’ll have to make a quick stop in New York to brief Alexander, but then I’ll be back.”

Wrapping her arms across her waist, she smiled, then wished him well on his flight and said goodbye.

Hudson watched her walk away, wishing he didn’t have to go. That was unusual for him. Usually, he got in and got out of a place as fast as he could, and once he left, it usually meant he didn’t return.

Kayleigh, however, had been a breath of fresh air, which he really appreciated after the stress of his overseas trip. So maybe it wasn’t the resort that was drawing him back…

Turning, Hudson headed for the elevator to take him to the floor where his suite was located. He needed to pack a few last-minute things, then get in his rental car and head to Coeur d’Alene.

As he boarded the company jet a couple of hours later, the pilot let him know that they’d be stopping in New York to pick up more people on their way to Scotland. He wasn’t sure why they hadn’t just come with the plane, but he supposed they were pretty much flying right back over New York on their way to Glasgow.

After taking a seat, he accepted the attendant’s offer of a drink. He was eager to get the flight underway. It would take around four and a half to five hours to reach New York, then they’d probably be on the ground for an hour or two for the others to join him onboard.

With that schedule, they’d be landing in Glasgow sometime late morning or early afternoon. It wasn’t ideal, but hopefully they could get some sleep on the plane. The jet was equipped with comfortable seats that could be fully reclined, and there was even a bed at the back of the plane.

Since he wanted to be comfortable for the flight, he’d chosen to travel in sweats and a long sleeve Henley. He had a couple of suits and dress shirts pressed and hanging in a garment bag, and he’d change into one of them before they landed in Glasgow.

Once they were in the air, Hudson stared out the window at the lights of the city below them. It didn’t take long to leave them behind, and soon the attendant was back with an offer of food. Since he hadn’t eaten dinner yet, Hudson eagerly accepted.

As he ate the chicken cordon bleu meal the attendant had brought him, he did some work, then opened his eBook app to read for a bit. He had a science fiction series he was working his way through, and it felt like a good time to indulge in some entertainment.
