Kayleigh knew she needed to pray more, and as she filled the page with the words, she prayed. Her anxiety didn’t completely disappear, but an assurance settled in her heart that God was still in control. She just hoped that God would use Hudson and the woman from headquarters to clear Wilder’s name.

When her phone rang, her hand jerked, sending a line of black ink across the page. Hudson’s name on the screen brought up a rush of conflicting emotions. She wanted to hear what he had to say, but she also… didn’t.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Kayleigh. How are you doing?”

“I’m a bit of a mess,” Kayleigh said, though she realized belatedly that perhaps confessing that to someone who was essentially her boss might not be the best idea.

“I can only imagine.” Hudson’s tone was sympathetic. “To be honest, I’m not as detached as I probably should be.”

Kayleigh wasn’t sure why, but him saying that soothed her a bit. It made her feel a little less alone, especially if her family ended up being angry with her.

“Were you able to speak with Wilder?” Kayleigh asked.

“Yes. He came to my suite during his lunch hour and met with me and Caren.”

“How… how was he?”

“Shocked. Appalled. Which makes sense. It was good for Caren to see Wilder’s reaction to the news. I think it supported his innocence.”

If that was really the case, then it was worth any anger her family might harbor against her for agreeing to leave Wilder in the dark.

“Was he really upset?”

“At first, but when he realized that we were willing to consider all the evidence and not just take the woman’s word against his, he calmed down a bit. He insisted on going back to work.”

That sounded like Wilder. He’d want to keep working, not just because he didn’t want to disappoint his clients, but also for the distraction work would provide him.

“So what happens now?”

“Caren is gathering information from Wilder, trying to account for his movements at the times the alleged incidents occurred. We’ll get the security camera footage, then piece it all together and see where it leads.”

Kayleigh wished that Wilder’s word that he hadn’t done it would be enough, but she knew that would rarely—if ever—be sufficient in a case like this. Plus, she didn’t want them to just take the woman’s word without proof, so she accepted that that needed to apply to Wilder as well.

They were just fortunate that Remington had people who were willing to give him the chance to prove his innocence. It could have gone so much differently had he worked for a company who reacted without gathering all the information or giving him the benefit of the doubt.

“Thank you for being the one to tell Wilder about this. If he couldn’t hear it from me, I’m glad it came from you.”

“I didn’t tell Caren just how much time I’ve spent with you and Wilder outside of work hours. She might not have let me be present if she had known that.”

“Will that impact anything if she finds out?”

“I doubt it,” Hudson said. “After all, I’m letting Caren run the show. I’m not directing the investigation.”

“How long do you think it will be before everything is settled?”

“It depends on how long it takes to get the camera footage.”

Kayleigh rubbed her forehead, trying to ease the tension headache that seemed to be building. “Is Wilder allowed to continue to work?”

“Yes. However, we told him that he has to stay away from the main building, since that’s where the accuser works.”

“That shouldn’t be a problem,” Kayleigh said. “I don’t think he goes there very often.”

“Yeah. He said that he’s been there most recently at my request. Also, Wilder asked about getting a lawyer.”

Kayleigh hadn’t even considered that he might need one. “And should he?”
