“Alright. Thanks for letting me know.”

“He’s been casing the joint!” Liz sounded so indignant. “That should be illegal.”

“Would be if he planned to rob the place. However, he’s a Remington employee, just like we are. If he’s here on business, he can do whatever he needs to.”

“Still! It seems wrong.”

“We have nothing to hide,” Kayleigh said. “And it makes sense that he’d show up ahead of his visit to see for himself how things are operated around here.”

“This makes him just a little less attractive, I have to say.”

Kayleigh shook her head, even though Liz couldn’t see her. “His attractiveness, or lack thereof, is the least of my concerns.”

“That’s because you’re a bore when it comes to men,” Liz informed her. “You don’t care about the important stuff.”

Kayleigh didn’t bother to correct her. Liz could be a bit man-crazy, but she also couldn’t manage to hold on to a boyfriend for longer than a couple of months. Would Mr. Hudson St. James be her next boyfriend? Kayleigh really didn’t think Liz was so upset with the man that she’d turn him down if he asked her out on a date.

“Oh. He also asked where your office was located. I gave him directions.”

Kayleigh tried to ignore the swell of nerves in her stomach. Since he had that information, he could show up at any moment.

“Okay. Thanks for helping him.”

“Definitely not a hardship,” Liz said with a laugh. “Back to work.”

Before Kayleigh could respond, Liz hung up. Kayleigh sat for a moment, then picked up her phone to place another call. She figured if the guy was coming to talk about the thefts that had occurred, it might be good to have an update for him from the cops.

“Hi, Chief,” Kayleigh said when the man answered her call. “This is Kayleigh Halverson.”

“Hi, Kayleigh. How are things at the resort today? I hope you’re not calling with another theft.”

“Thankfully, no. I was calling to see if there was any update on the previous ones.”

“We had our guys watch all the footage we collected, but so far we haven’t found anything.”

“Isn’t that suspicious?” Kayleigh asked. “I mean, it’s not like the thieves have an invisibility cloak. How are they getting in and out of rooms withnofootage of them in the hallways or the elevators?”

The man was quiet for a moment, and when he spoke again, his voice was gentle. “Kayleigh, I think you might need to consider that these incidents have been inside jobs.”

Kayleigh exhaled heavily. “Really?”

“It seems the most plausible explanation.”

She hated the idea. Absolutely hated it. Kayleigh didn’t want to think that someone they’d vetted and hired had decided to use their job at the resort as an opportunity to rob their guests.

“How would we know for sure?”

“We’ll need to delve a bit deeper into the recordings, and maybe look at who might have access to the security footage.”

“Is there any chance it’snotan employee?”

“Sure. I can’t say with one hundred percent certainty that it’s an inside job just yet. However, that’s an avenue we need to explore as it’s definitely a possibility.”

Kayleigh’s shoulders slumped as the weight of that thought pressed down on her. “Will you keep me appraised of how that investigation goes?”

“I will.”

“Thank you.” They chatted for a couple of minutes about her family and his, then ended the call.
