Hudson listened as Caren recounted the details Jenn had given them regarding her interactions with Liz. She spoke so matter-of-factly that even if he hadn’t been at the meeting with Jenn, he’d be completely convinced.

“Would you like to explain why you told Jenn you were going to have to lay off people? It seemed that perhaps you were putting out feelers for who might be desperate enough to come to you and ask what they could do to keep their job.”

Liz crossed her arms. “You seem to have all the answers.”

“Do you have something against Wilder?” Caren asked.

Liz remained silent, and Hudson had to fight the urge to thump the table with his fist and demand that she answer.

“Or perhaps… you have something against Kayleigh?”

Hudson stared at Liz, taking in how she looked at Kayleigh with narrowed eyes. Had Caren hit the nail on the head?

“The two of them are just spoiled brats,” Liz said with a dismissive flick of her hand.

Hudson heard Kayleigh’s quick intake of breath and wanted to comfort her as she listened to her “friend” speak so harshly about her and her brother.

“What do you mean by that?” Caren asked.

“Big rich family. College paid for. They got their jobs because they knew Alexander Remington.”

“So you’re saying that Kayleigh doesn’t do her job here?”

Liz’s face tightened with anger as she poked her chest with her finger. “Ishould have gotten that job. The manager position should have beenmine.”

“Did you apply for the job?” Caren asked.

“Yes. But I wasn’t aware that I didn’t even have a chance at it. Why open the position to applications if they already knewshehad the job?” Liz turned her angry gaze fully on Kayleigh. “I’ve had to work hard forevery single thingI’ve ever gotten. And then there’s you and Wilder… everything handed to you on a silver platter. It’s notfair!”

“I’m sorry you feel that way, Liz,” Kayleigh told her, a slight waver to her voice.

“Take yoursorryand shove it.”

“I must inform you that you are officially fired,” Caren said.

“You don’t have the power to fire me,” Liz shot back in response.

“I think you’ll find that she does.” Hudson finally waded into the conversation. “But if you need to hear it from me… you’re fired.”

“You’re not my manager.”

Kayleigh sighed. “Why are you trying to put off the inevitable, Liz? Alexander Remington is Hudson and Caren’s boss, so they are both able to fire anyone they want.”

“You’re making them do your dirty work,” Liz challenged. “No guts to do it yourself?”

Kayleigh seemed to accept that she had to fire her friend. “Elizabeth Gray, you are fired from Remington Properties for improper conduct in the course of your job as Guest Relations Manager.”

Stephanie was on her phone, texting someone, probably relieved that she didn’t have to add her firing to the ones already given to Liz. Hudson couldn’t believe the turn the meeting had taken.

“Tell me what you know about the thefts?” Hudson said on a whim.

Liz’s eyes widened briefly before she shook her head. “I know nothing.”

Hudson looked at Caren, and understanding passed between them.

“This is your one chance to tell us the truth,” Caren warned.

“Like it would make any difference,” Liz muttered. “I’ve messed with Alexander Remington’s precious pets. I’m done talking. About anything and everything.”
