“I don’t want to have to put on real clothes to go anywhere,” she said. “I want to wear jammies, so you can go to the door. What’s on DoorDash here?” She’d had food delivered a few times to the hospital, and that had gone well for her. She was definitely a fan of all the delivery options that were available.

“Let’s do Bravo Tex-Mex,” he said.

“Now you’re speaking my language.”

They both dressed, her in her jammies, and he in shorts and a t-shirt, and they went downstairs. While she looked up what they had at Bravo, he watched her. “What are you looking at?” she finally asked, once she’d decided on enchiladas.

“My wife,” Nate said, reaching out and brushing the back of his fingers against her cheek.

She wasn’t certain how to respond to that. “I want enchiladas,” she told him.

“What kind?”

“Chicken.” He picked up his phone and went to the DoorDash app. “Do you cook?”

She shrugged. “About as much as I did when you knew me before. I can make a few things, but I haven’t really had time to learn to cook well.”

“All right,” he said, his fingers punching in their order.

“Do you cook?” she asked.

He smiled. “Actually, I do. I’ve learned to make a lot of different meals over the years, and I love to grill out.”

“I’m going to have to take advantage of that,” she said.

“I’m too busy in the summer to do much, but it’s already mid-September. I’ll be getting slower at work in the next month or two, so then I’ll cook for you.”

“Good answer!” she grinned at him. “Oh, I took Monday off work. I wasn’t sure if I’d need an extra day to get to know my new husband.”

“I can take Monday. My assistant can handle the crew.”

“Your assistant? You’re the big boss man now!”

Nate shook his head, laughing. “I’ve tripled the size of the company. I try to line up interior jobs for the winter, and I can usually keep everyone busy. My dad built a good company, and we have a great reputation in the community.”

“That’s wonderful! You’ll have to help me with some of the business stuff. I feel completely lost. I mean, I know what the clinic needs, and I’m ordering it, but it feels like I’m really lost with payroll and stuff.”

“I can help you set up a system. Who will be doing your payroll?” he asked.

“Rachel. She’s my receptionist.”

He nodded. “All right. Does she have any college or anything?”

Shelby shook her head. “She doesn’t. She’s been flitting from one job to another since high school.”

“She’s not dumb though,” he said. He remembered her clearly from high school, where Rachel had been a year ahead of him and Shelby. “I can teach her if she’s willing to learn.”

“She says she is. She wants to be done changing jobs so often.”

“Good,” he said. “I’ll find some time to run by your office one day this week and work with her.”

“She works every day from eight to five.”

“Sounds good. You’ll have to jot down the address for me.”

“I thought getting married would make me think less about work. Here you are offering to help, and I’m very grateful.”

“You know I’ll help however I can,” he said. When the doorbell rang, he stood up. “I’ll meet you in the dining room.”
