This thought is especially dangerous because I now have to manage to keep my composure in front of my betrothed, Amelie Brantley.

The Brantley’s are an old and distinguished dragon family. Not so distinguished or old as ours, but old and distinguished enough that when my father announced my betrothal to Lady Amelie, none of the other dragon families were surprised.

Politically, this union makes a lot of sense. The Viperas control a great deal of financial assets around the world and have the ability to impact the global economy and even the future of global economic policy. It’s not surprising that several EU officials have called assuring me they will rework the accord with which Brooke refuses to participate to make it more suitable for our family.

The Brantley’s control a great deal of natural resources. They own more land than any other private party on Earth, and the land they own is replete with treasures like oil, natural gas, precious metals, industrially significant materials like iron, copper and silicon and many other crucial pieces of almost any manufacturing puzzle you can come up with.

By allying our two families, we’re ensuring the future not only of our families, but of all dragons. We’re solidifying ties that are critical if we’re going to maintain the peace and prosperity we’ve enjoyed since the dawn of human history.

Unfortunately, that means I need to marry a woman who is perhaps the least exciting person I’ve ever met in my life.

I hate how shallow I sound when I say that, but it truly is difficult for me to be around Amelie. She’s…

Well, perhaps I should simply tell you about the conversation we have when she lands.

Brooke is working on some paperwork for the family today. It’s tedious work, but it will keep her away from me and from Amelie and diminish the risk that she’ll find out about Amelie’s and my betrothal.

There’s no hiding Brooke from Amelie, but like I say earlier, human-dragon relationships are not frowned upon. Amelie will simply assume I’ve felt the calling.

Amelie meets me at the helipad and when she sees me, she smiles widely and opens her arms for an embrace. She’s an uncommonly beautiful woman, and if physical appearance was the only thing to consider, then I would have a much easier time accepting our union.

Amelie has bright green eyes and shimmering reddish-brown hair that flows to her hips. She has a perfect hourglass figure with creamy smooth skin and curves everywhere a woman should have curves. When she embraces me and kisses me, her lips are soft and cool and her body melts perfectly into mine.

But she can’t hold a candle to Brooke, not physically and not mentally.

“Oh my God!” she cries out, laughing as she pulls away. “You would notbelievethe day I’ve had!”

“I trust the flight was to your satisfaction?” I reply.

She waves her hand dismissively. “Yeah, it was nice. Your new helicopter is a lot more comfortable than the last one. But oh my God, wait until I tell you what Stephanie said to me!”

She tells me all about it over dinner. I don’t know who Stephanie is, but I don’t know if it matters. The real point of this conversation seems to be to inform me that someone named Michael Kors has released a new shoe, and that bitch Stephanie justhadto get a pair before she did and sent her a picture gloating about it.

“I mean, I called Daddy and had him buy me ten pairs right away. One for every day of the week.”

She giggles, and I can only hope it’s because she realizes that there are only seven days in the week, and she’s just joking about there being ten.

“So how are you, Aidey?” she asks, rubbing my shoulder affectionately.

Aidey.

Oh God, I hope that doesn’t become a thing.

“I’m well, thank you,” I reply.

“I’ll bet you are,” she teases. “I could smell her on you.”

She’s referring to Brooke. Like I said, there’s no way to hide from a dragon when you’ve taken a human lover. It won’t bother her at all, but I have no desire to discuss it, so I only say, “She was a passing fancy. Nothing more.”

She laughs, a tittering sound that grates on me in ways that I can’t describe. “Of course she is! She’s a human, silly. They’re only good for one thing, but sometimes they’reverygood for that, aren’t they?”

She gasps and grabs my arm, “Oh my God! Did I ever tell you about that cute boy I met in Sweden? Oh myGod, Aiden, thecockon that boy!”

I endure hearing about her dalliance with the boy from Sweden. I endure a full week of complaints about the fact that the maid doesn’t turn down her sheets unless she leaves the room, how Stephanie is like, her best friend ever, but she’s also a one-upping bitch, how she can’t wait until we’re married and she can get pampered like a true queen, how one day I should let her watch while I sleep with a human so she can see if there’s anything she should prepare herself for.

That last one is delivered as a joke, but I truly don’t know how I’ll manage to survive a lifetime with her.

Finally, the week is over, and I try not to be so excited as I escort her to the helicopter. She embraces me and kisses my cheek. “Bye, Aidey!” she says. “I can’t wait to see you again!”
