My gaze narrows. “Because you’re mine.”

She bites her lower lip, and those shadows in her gaze darken. “I want to tell you something, but I’m afraid.”

Her body begins to tremble beneath my touch. Whatever’s bothering her, it’s serious. “Tell me.”

“First, I need to know, am I still your enemy?”

It takes me a second to answer her. “That hasn’t changed.”

Just as quickly as the shadows came, they disappear behind a gray shuttered wall.

She glances at the clock on the nightstand which reads nine thirty. “I should get ready. They’re probably getting restless down there. Give me five minutes.”

“I’ll be downstairs.”

Luca and Carina are already dressed and having breakfast in the dining room, and to my surprise, they’ve been joined by Gunn, Rowan, Noah, and his fiancée, Emily.

“Good morning,” Carina says. “Sleep well?”

“Well enough.”

“Help yourself to the bar. Nan made an amazing spread.” She looks over at the older woman still setting up a buffet-style breakfast on the long table sitting by the windows.

“Thanks, but I’m not hungry.” Then to Noah and Rowan, I say, “You two are here early.”

“It’s not a far drive for me,” Noah says.

Rowan stabs three of the four sausage links on his plate. Out of everyone at the table, he’s the largest, so it doesn’t shock me that he prefers meat to anything else. “Luca texted me last night. I hopped on the first plane. Just got in.”

“I messaged Gavin too, but he’s not answering any of my calls,” Luca says.

Noah’s frowns. “I messaged him yesterday and he hasn’t responded.”

Luca taps a finger against the table. “Let’s try again today. If there’s still no answer, we’ll make other calls. As far as anything we discuss here, we can fill him in later.”

Nan pours something thick and green into a tall glass and drops it in front of Gunn. “Drink this.”

“It looks like shit,” he says.

She smacks the back of his head, and the sunglasses I just noticed fall off his face. “And so do you. If you hadn’t drunk the entire bottle of tequila, you wouldn’t need that shit. And you.” This is directed at Rowan. “Get some fruit on that plate. I don’t care how fit you think you are, you can still die of a heart attack.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Gunn rubs his temples. “You scare us, Nan.”

“Good.” As she grabs her purse from a nearby chair, she says to Luca, “I’m outta here before you all start discussing things I shouldn’t hear.”

“Bye, Nan. Love you!” Carina calls out as the woman leaves, then looks over at me. “Sit, Arran. You make me nervous standing over there like that.”

I choose the seat next to her. “I spoke with Ruslan a bit ago. He has eyes on my house. As expected, it’s surrounded by police.”

“Oh, right to it,” Carina says and takes a sip of orange juice. “I thought we could finish eating first.”

“No time,” I say. “I’d like to get there and see the damage for myself. I lost thirteen men.”

“And you’re sure it was Gideon?” Noah asks.

“There’s no other possibility,” I reply. “He’s the only one who has anything to benefit from it.”
