“Yes. We’re going directly to that dingy hole I’m keeping her in. On the way, you’re going to talk.” He opens the door for me and I slide onto the buttery-soft leather seat.

It takes every ounce of strength I possess not to run out as he rounds the hood and gets in himself. The engine roars to life, powerful and intimidating, just like the man beside me.

One of the SUVs goes ahead of us. Then a minute later, Gideon gets a message on his cell phone, which I assume is the all clear, and we move, the other vehicle following behind us.

“So tell me, how has your time with Arran been?” he asks. “I was glad to see he hadn’t killed you.”

I shake my head in annoyance. “Did you go to the club to warn Arran? Or was it for me?”

“Both?” He chuckles. “Truthfully, I was just in the area and wanted to have a little fun.”

Like a cat toying with its food.

“Your little fun could have ruined everything.” God, I was so nervous, I thought I’d vomit. “Arran could have discovered me and you’d still have no idea where Clive is.”

“Speaking of which, where exactly did you say he was?”

“I didn’t. And I won’t until I see that Maisie is safe.”

“Fair enough.”

I stare ahead, watching as we enter the city, the road becoming more and more congested. “Has she asked for me?”

“Not really.” He shrugs.

A knot forms in my throat as I picture her in that basement we were held in, the walls made of cinder block, not a window in sight. There was a cot, the sort one takes camping, so at least I don’t believe she’s been sleeping on the floor. But our things were taken. Her precious sketchbook.

Has she been treated decently? Fed? Allowed to see the sun at all?

All of these questions are flowing through my mind when we pull up to a swanky building not far from where Maxton House is located.

“Where are we?” I ask, glancing all around us.

“Well, your sister’s temporary prison, of course.”

I frown. “What?”

A valet comes around the Bentley just as Gideon steps out. “Take good care of her.”

“Yes, sir.”

Another man opens the door for me. I exit the car in somewhat of a stupor and take Gideon’s arm when he offers it. “This isn’t where we were before.”

“Oh, that?” He shivers dramatically. “I’d never have kept a lady there. Too many rats. That was just in case you needed motivation.”

“So she’s here?”

“Why else would I bring you here? I’m anxious to get Clive. Believe me, I’m the last person who would prolong this. Besides, Scar might be ready to kill your sister by now. She’s not the kid type.”

“Who’s Scar?”

As we walk into the beautiful reception area that reminds me of an upscale hotel, I imagine Maisie dealing with this woman who doesn’t like kids. Was she horrible to her? God, I just need to see her already.

There are four elevators in the lobby. Several people hop onto the first one that opens. I try to as well, but Gideon stops me.

“Wait,” he says, holding his arm out to keep me from moving.

When another one opens, a tall Asian man peers out. He’s just as handsome as Gideon, dressed just as deadly gorgeous. And when they make eye contact, I realize he’s one of his guards.
