After we enter, he stands menacingly at the doors, preventing anyone else from approaching.

Gideon presses the button for the ninth floor. The elevator ascends rapidly and delivers us to a long hallway lined with doors with pretty wreaths and golden numbers.

But it’s not the doors that get my attention. It’s the many cameras stationed at intervals throughout.

The guard goes ahead of us and knocks on the door at the very end of the hall. A blonde woman opens it.

“Itsuki,” she greets. Then she glances over his shoulder at us. “Ah, you’re here so soon.”

The guard leans in and whispers something in her ear, then she nods, dismissing him.

“Scar, this is Imo— I mean Skye,” Gideon introduces. “Skye, this is Scarlet. She’s my…”

“I’m your number one,” she offers when he seems stuck for words. “The underboss.”

“She’s Maisel’s babysitter,” he says with a huge grin.

Her red lips tug to one side and she crosses her arms. “You know, Giddy, you’re starting to annoy me.”

His smile fades. “I see the girl is rubbing off on you.” He reaches over and touches a thin red cut on her cheek. “What the fuck happened to you? Did you fight someone without telling me?”

“Training.” Moving aside, she indicates for us to enter. After checking the hallway, she shuts the door and engages five locks.

“You have enemies to worry about?” I ask.

“Not as many as you,” she replies.

“I want to see my sister.” I push past the foyer into the lovely home. “Maisie!” When she doesn’t answer right away, I call for her again, “Maisie!”

I move fast through every room I come across, searching for her. Somewhere in the distance, I hear a muffled, “Skye?”

Running toward it, I find myself in the kitchen, where I freeze, completely dumbfounded by the sight before me. Maisie, takeout Chinese spread out on the table, noodles hanging from her mouth, and a magazine in front of her.

She scrambles out of her seat, wiping away hair that has strayed from her messy bun. “Skye! You’re here!”

Our bodies collide, my arms wrapping around her so tight, I’m afraid I’ll asphyxiate her, but I can’t help it.

“Maze, I missed you so much!” I cup her cheeks and examine every speck on her face, searching for signs of injury. “Are you okay? Have you been hurt?”

“No. I’m fine. What about you? Did that pig who bought you treat you well?”

“Well enough.” I hug her again, noticing how clean she smells and the nice clothes she’s wearing. “Where did you get these?”

“Scarlet got us matching pajamas.”

“I mean, I wasn’t trying to be twins or anything,” the woman says sheepishly. “I just liked them too.”

Turning my attention back to my sister, I ask, “So they didn’t keep you in that basement at all?”

She shakes her head. “Nah. Like five minutes after you left, so did we. I’ve been here with Scarlet ever since.”

I glance at Scarlet with her matching pajamas. “And she’s treated you well?”

“Really well. We’ve been having a lot of fun.”

Taking both her hands, I squeeze them. “Maisie, I was so afraid something was going to happen to—” I pause as my thumbs come across bandages. When I peer down, I see that her knuckles have been wrapped.

She tries to pull away, but I grasp the wrist of one arm at the same time that I tug up the sleeve. Her arm is covered in small scrapes and bruises and I gasp in horror.
