So I go down too, in time to watch her dispatch another guy. This one screams before she slits his throat, alerting the last goon to our presence. Unfortunately for me, I’m the first one he sees.

He lunges for me and I jump up so many stairs, I nearly make it all the way to the second floor again. But Scarlet manages to grab him by the ankles and drags him down to her level to take him out.

Breathing hard, she looks at me. Blood drips from her knife and her hair. I’m sure there’s more of it smattering her tight black turtleneck and pants, but it’s harder to see.

She looks like an avenger. A deadly weapon who saved me.

“YouareRage,” I whisper. It doesn’t matter what Skye says. Rage and Scarlet are the same.

“Kid, I—” She whirls just as another man, this one much bigger and meaner-looking than the others, attacks.

She blocks his punch, swinging her blade at him. But he easily avoids being gutted and smacks her across the face. Before I can even gasp at that, she kicks him two times consecutively, once in his leg and the other in his ribs.

They separate and stare at each other, smiling. Only then do I realize that the guy is one of Arran’s friends. Gun, I believe he called him.

“Didn’t think I’d have the chance to play with you again,” he tells her, his grin wide.

“I thought we were dancing?” she returns his smile.

She drives forward. He jumps back, but she adjusts and manages to nick his arm.

When he touches the spot and brings back blood on his fingers, his grin widens. “Has your knife gotten bigger, or are you just happy to see me?”

Laughter bursts from her. “I like your smile… What was your name again?”

“Gunn. Twon’s.”

“All right, Gunn with twon’s. When I take you down, I promise to carve that smile permanently on your face so that when you’re lying in your coffin, everyone can still see those dimples.”

“There are other ways you could kill me and leave me with a smile,” he retorts.

“In your dreams.”

“You already did, sweetheart. Many times over.”

I frown, confused by their exchange. “Do you guys know each other?”

They both look at me as if they’re surprised I’m there. Like I disappeared for a moment while they were having their weird exchange.

“She’s one of the bad guys,” Gunn says.

“So is he.”

I glance between the two, who are still in battle stance, knives out, ready to fight. Something tells me they’ve fought before. And if they have and they’re both standing here alive, they’re equally matched.

Gunn grabs my arm and moves me behind him protectively. “Backup is on its way. You’re safe now.”

Backup? I look at Scarlet. She’s an amazing fighter. Maybe better than Gunn. But how many men are coming?Whois coming? Would she end up killing people who are here to save me before dying herself?

I can’t allow that.

I jump as high as I can and wrap my arms around Gunn’s neck, making him stumble back.

“Scarlet, run!” I scream to her. Gunn tries to dislodge me, but I hold on like my life depends on it.

Scarlet’s lips thin as she hesitates, and for a moment, I think she might still try to fight him. Just as she seems to change her mind and whirl around, Arran appears behind her looking all beat up, as if he’s taken on a man or two himself.

“Watch out!” I yell. But it’s too late.
