“Found what you're searchin’ for yet?” I hit back at her, for some unknown, stupid reason, redirecting my route and leading Rebel over toward the porch.

Savannah’s sitting on the rocking chair with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders, nursing a glass of whiskey, and as I tie Rebel to the rail and step up onto the porch, I feel drawn to her in a way that I can’t ignore.

“Not yet, but Jesus loves a trier, right?” She sips from her glass like she’s purposely trying to tease me with her lips before she holds out the glass for me to share.

“You think you're gonna find it out on this porch?” I laugh at her as I take a sip and hand it back. Savannah shrugs her shoulders, wearing that smart little smile that sends me wild.

“Why don’t you just ask me the question you really want the answer to?” She gets up from the chair, putting down her glass and stepping so close to me that the tips of our boots touch. I manage to look down my nose at her and hold my nerve.

“And what am I so desperate to know?” I humor her.

“If I’ve ever been kissed by a cowboy.” She licks her bottom lip with her eyes settled on my mouth before stretching up on her toes, and the hand that slides behind my neck prevents me from pulling away as her lips connect with mine. They’re soft and taste like expensive whiskey, and I remain static, with my breath held and my eyes closed as her mouth explores mine. I wait for her to pull away before I slowly open them back up again

“Well, now I have.” The smart little grin she makes as she turns to step back inside the house ignites something inside me that feels like it should be chained down. But it ain’t, and it’s that something that has me gripping her by her waist and slamming her back against the outside wall. I slide my hand up her throat and cup her jaw before my mouth covers hers and I invade her with my tongue, desperate to get a taste of her again and losing all my fuckin’ senses in the process.

“Thatwas bein’ kissed by a cowboy,” I growl, with my fingers gripping tight around her jaw. “And if you got any sense, you’ll make sure you never do that again.” I point my finger at her face and let her see my rage.

That wasn’t supposed to happen. Damn, I’ve thought about doing it enough times, but I’m furious that she got a reaction from me. I pull my hat forward and turn around, untethering Rebel and wiping my forearm across my mouth to rid myself of the taste of her. Having a reminder will only make me wanna go back for more.

I don’t look back, I already know the intoxicating bitch will be smiling, and as I head inside the stable and rest down Rebel for the night, I try not to think about Aubrey. It feels like too much of a betrayal.

“What are you doing?” Leia asks with a tiny hint of a smile on her lips while she eats her breakfast.

“I’m just watchin’ ya.” I slouch back in the chair I’m sitting in with a proud smile on my face. It’s been over a week since everything happened and I’m starting to see glimpses of my girl coming back to me.

“You’re lucky you don’t get sick. Maisie used to really suffer.” I still can’t believe she’s got my kid growing inside her, it don’t feel real.

“Maybe it’s because I’m eating breakfast when it’s closer to lunchtime,” she points out. Leia may not be getting sick but she does get tired. Ridiculously tired. I swear she could fall asleep standing up.

“I don’t care what it is, just as long as you’re both okay.” I take her hand and kiss her knuckles, because, despite all the shit that’s happened, I got a lot to smile about.

“Come on. I got somewhere I need to take ya.” I drag her up from the table once she’s finished.

“Where we going?”

“It won’t be a surprise if I tell ya, will it?” I start moving us toward the door.

“Wade, I’m still in my PJs.” She looks down at herself to remind me.

“That don’t matter,” I assure her, starting to feel excited and nervous when more of that happy smile lifts onto her face.

She slips on her boots and lets me lead her across the yard toward the stable where Finn’s got Hooter saddled up, ready.

“You wanna take a ride?” I ask.

“I thought you said I wasn’t allowed to, the other day when I—”

“You were tryin’ to ride without me. This is different.” I grab her by the hips and lift her up onto Hooter’s back before I hoist myself up behind her.

“First of all, there’s only one horse I’d put you and my baby on the back of.” I take the reins before I lean forward and pat Hooter’s neck. “Hooter here is my best friend. We could put our new baby on his back and he’d carry it like an egg. Second of all, you got the best rider in the state in control, and we’re takin’ a real steady ride.” I let my lips brush against her ear as I kick Hooter into a trot.

I ride us out toward Grid 2 where there’s a real good view of Coppers Ridge and as I ride across the pastures we own and take in the open space, I slide my hand around Leia’s waist, resting my hand where our own little part in the Carson history is growing.

She leans back and rests her head against my shoulder, sighing contently as the morning sun warms her face, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a sight more perfect.

“You ain’t goin’ to sleep on me, are ya?” I kiss her cheek and make her laugh.

“No, I’m just… I’m happy.” She sits up and looks over her shoulder at me as if her own words have taken her by surprise. She’s been through so much, maybe she feels like she doesn’t deserve it, but I intend on spending the rest of our lives proving that she does.
