“Me?” I laugh at him. “I’m a lotta things, but I ain’t no mayor. I don’t do politics.”

“See, what I also need from the man I make, is for him to be a little bit desperate. You're a well-liked man, Garrett Carson, people feel safe when you're around them, you give them a sense of security. You're perfect.”

“But I ain’t desperate.” I narrow my eyes at him, highlighting the flaw in his plan. “And I ain’t the kinda man youmake.”

“We’ll see.” The cocky smile he gives me makes the vein in my temple pulse.

“I can’t… Iwon’t.” Now it’s my turn to laugh, does this man honestly think he can turn up here and demand me to do his fuckin’ work?

“Way I see it, you haven’t got a lot of choice. Refuse me, and I’ll do a lot worse than an old crone like Ronnie Mason. You’ll have developers crawling in like cockroaches, bigger roads, bigger buildings, bigger everything. Just how long do you think you and yourbrandedmen can hold that off?” he questions.

“Harvey.” I look at him sternly as he backs away from the gate he’s leaning over and starts to walk away.

“You got a week to decide, Carson,” he calls over his shoulder before getting back in his car and signalling for his driver to pull away.
