“I know where fuckin’ home is, Cole.” I shake my head and squeeze the bridge of my nose.

“D’ya? Because I don’t fuckin’ see ya here. What I see is you runnin’ away from all your problems. You let that Waker girl marry Caleb Mason knowin’ he’s a piece of shit. You want her daddy dead just as badly as the rest of us do. Distance ain’t gonna change any of that.” I dig my nails into my palm when his words aggravate me.

“Look, Garrett ain’t happy about any of this, I sure as shit ain’t either. You wanted us to give her a chance, now it looks like we’re gonna have to do it. And if we do, we’re gonna do it together. Your family need ya, Wade. It’s time to pull ya head out your ass.”

“I’m not buryin—”

“We got the all clear on killin’ Walker,” he interrupts me and as I let his words sink in, all I can see is Leia’s face.

“Would it have mattered if we didn’t?” I huff out a laugh.

George Walker has been a dead man walking since the day we found out he knocked up, and killed, our sister. The fact I’m head over spurs in love with his daughter is the whole reason I had to give her up. I had lifelong happiness right in the palm of my hand, and I had to fuckin’ crush it. There is no doubt that the man who killed my sister has to die, and I never thought I’d be the man to put vengeance over love. I just see no way out of it.

“We just need to bide our time. The game’s changed, Wade. Garrett’s got a family to protect.Wehave a family to protect.” Cole proves he ain’t budging on this.

“I told ya, when the time for justice comes, I’ll come back to make that fucker suffer with ya.” I sigh, knowing that I could never stay in Fork River, not now Leia’s married to another man.

“Mom’s gonna be comin’ home tomorrow. Maisie and the babies got home yesterday, we got a house guest who appeared out of thin fuckin’ air…” Cole sounds exhausted and agitated all at the same time. He’s never been one to cope well with hassle.

“Sounds to me like the house is already full.” I shrug, trying to act like I don’t give a fuck.

I hate that I had to meet my niece and nephews over a video call. I hate that Mom wanted to end her own life, and there's a good chance me and my brothers are part of that reason. But the idea of seeing Leia on a regular basis now that I’ve let her go, is far too unbearable to do anything about it.

“We gotta be together in this, or the cracks that are formin’ in this family are gonna break us. IneedOld Man Mason to pay for what he did to Aubrey. IneedWalker dead for what he did to Bree, and Ineedmy little brother to be by my side keepin’ me on the level until those things can happen.” The slight quake in his voice tells me he’s up to his limit, but this time I got nothin’ for him.

“Yeah, well, I ain’t the man for the job, right now,” I admit, hating that he’ll hear how weak I sound. I’ve always been the one to make light of shit, but there ain’t no light in a broken fuckin’ heart.

“Come home, Wade,” Cole pleads one last time. “I know where you're at. I’ve been there. The thought of seein’ that girl with him makes you wanna rip the heart outta ya chest. I get better than anyone what I’m askin’ of ya, but we need you.” I don’t think I’ve ever heard my brother sound so desperate, but it doesn’t change a thing.

It’s not safe for me to go back. I don’t know who I am anymore. Cole’s right. Garrett has a family to protect now. He can’t do anything that will end him up in jail, or worse… dead. Some things you gotta bide your time over. But I can’t play nice around a man who killed my little sister.

“I’m sorry, Cole.” I hang up the phone before he can argue, and slide my hand over my face.

“What's troubling ya, honey?” I look up and see one of the buckle bunnies stepping out the bar. She makes right for me, rubbing her lips together and sashaying her hips like she’s walking a runway.

“Nothin’.” I slide my phone back into my jeans and smile at her.

“What you mean is, nothing that I can’t fix.” Taking my hand in hers, she guides me round the side of the bar and pushes me against the wall.

“I was watching you train earlier; you’ve been out a while and you haven’t lost your touch.” Her palms splay across my chest and her lips brush against my jaw.

“You wanna see how I haven’t lost mine, either?” she whispers, tugging at my belt as she lowers herself onto her knees. I can’t even recall the girl’s name, and as she fishes into my jeans ready to take out my cock, all I can think about is Leia and how she was the last person to touch it.

“Stop. Get up.” I take her hair in my fist and yank her head away.

“What ya talkin’ about, baby?” She licks her lips and bats her lashes.

“I’m talkin’ ‘bout you gettin’ back on your fuckin’ feet.” I drag her up before I release her.

“Wade?” She stares back at me in confusion. “What’s wrong with you?”

“I’m… I just ain’t that person anymore,” I tell her, trying to figure what the fuck’s going on in my head.

The old me would have come down her throat and had her dress up over her thighs ready to go a second round by now. But that's not what I want anymore. Sex with Leia Walker has destroyed every other woman for me. The only lips I want wrapped around my cock are hers and the frustration that, right now, they could very well be wrapped around her new husband’s, has me punching my fist at the brick fuckin’ wall.

My head hits against the headboard as I stare at the ceiling and think about thefuck allI have to do today. Caleb speeds up his pace when he gets close to finishing, and I close my eyes and brace myself when he grabs one of my tits in his hands, squeezing it as he comes. There’s that awkward silence afterward. The one where he catches his breath and my mind wills for him to get the fuck off me.

“You know it could be over much quicker if you put some effort in,” he tells me, withdrawing himself from my body and getting off the bed. I feel him trickling out of me and try not to curl my lip in disgust.
