The others grinned but said nothing. It was a test for all of them. It was a new beginning. Henry turned to the men. "I'll pay you fifteen dollars an hour. I'm in need of fences to be built. I'll work along with you, at least for the first half of the day. We'll feed you lunch and dinner before you come back up. Are these arrangements agreeable to you?"

They looked at him in surprise and amazement. Carson finally said, "You'll feed us too?"

"Yes. We're feeding everyone at the house. The place is crawling with people these days. We've got a whole crew in and out of the house getting things pulled together."

"Wow. That's agreeable to me." Carson responded.

Waylon chuckled. "Carson eats like a horse, you'll likely change your mind tomorrow."

Henry laughed. "We'll see."

He strode to his truck feeling like this could work out nicely. In a short time he was going to have his farm up and running. They already had seven horses. And he had Everleigh. There wasn't much more he could ask for really.

Everleigh finished her email to Casper. Her heart hammered in her chest, but before she could lose her nerve, she hit send. She inhaled a deep breath and closed the lid on her laptop.

She carried her laptop upstairs and laid it on the dresser, made the bed, then headed down to feed and water the horses.

Just as she stepped off the porch, Dr. Emily's truck pulled into the driveway. She waved and jogged to the barn.

"Good morning."

"Good morning. How did your first night go?"

"I think it went great. I'm just now going in to say good morning to the ladies."

Dr. Emily laughed. "I'll be right in."

Everleigh opened the big barn door and said, "Good morning, ladies."

Harper's head poked over the stall door first. She snorted and Everleigh rubbed her satiny nose. Lady, Diamond, Miss Penny Mae were next and she greeted each one with a smile and a rub on the nose. Across the aisle, she greeted Jazzy, Sugar, and Queenie. Dr. Emily entered the barn and chuckled.

"What a different life these girls have now. It's beautiful to see."

Everleigh turned to her and smiled. "Thank you."

Dr. Emily set her big case on the ground. "I'll start with Queenie. Any issues with her wounds?"

"No, she lets me doctor her. She's gentle. It's almost like she knows we're trying to help her."

"She does. She's been injured before. Queenie was Case’s wife's horse. He took a big dislike to her because his wife left her behind. Poor girl had no say in any of it."

Everleigh's stomach hurt hearing this. Poor girl went through so much just because of who owned her. Nothing she'd done wrong. People sucked sometimes.

"Well, I can guarantee, she will never deal with beatings or misery ever again. It's our mission to rehab horses who have been abused."

"How did you get involved with horses?"

"It was my escape as a kid. My family is a military family, and we moved a lot. But there was usually a program for the kids at each base to teach us about horses. I reveled in it."

"That's wonderful. Have you thought about bringing school kids out here and teaching them about horses?"

Everleigh stared at Dr. Emily for a moment. "I hadn't thought about that. It's something I can talk to Henry about though."

"Okay. Well, I better get started. Any other concerns while I'm here?"

Everleigh cocked her head and looked at Harper, who stared out the stall door at her. "No. Just make sure their general health is good. We're hoping we'll be able to breed these gals one day."
