Taking her hand, Brett escorted her out of the restaurant. “Come on, little one. Let’s get you to bed.”

Flipping him a cheeky grin as he lifted her onto the high truck seat, she gripped his shoulders, replying, “You don’t have to tell me twice when you’re joining me.”

“Never thought I would.”

After ensuring Alliearrived at work without mishap, Brett drove straight to Gina’s new house in an upscale, gated community. Pulling into the driveway of her two-story brick home, he eyed the three-car garage, wondering why one person needed so much space, and the well-manicured lawn with a cynical curl of his mouth, remembering her disdain for yardwork. In fact, except for sex, she abhorred anything physical that would produce a sweat.

Before he could knock, she met him at the door wearing a short, silky robe that revealed she was naked underneath. He took in her tousled hair and sleepy eyes and made a point of checking his watch.

“Nine o’clock and just getting out of bed. You haven’t changed. I want a word with you.”

“Unless you’ve come to give me what I want, go away,” she said, using his standard line for greeting her.

“No, to both.” Shoving past her, he entered the house and strode into the formal living room, away from the door where neighbors could witness their encounter. He waved a hand toward her skimpy attire. “Your neighbors must love the peek show.”

“Do you?” Gina slipped a finger inside the robe and toyed with one nipple.

“No.” Bracing his feet apart on the white carpet, he folded his arms and focused on her facial expressions. “Are you behind the harassment plaguing the woman I’m seeing?” he asked point blank.

Gina winced, which could mean anything, but then she averted her face, which definitely meant something. “What the hell are you talking about?”

Suspicion and disbelief flared, but before Brett acted without proof, he snatched her arm and swung her around, hauling her against him. “So help me God, Gina, if you’re behind...”

She yanked out of his hold with an angry snarl. “Back off, Brett. I don’t know anything about your newest fling.”

“Allie isn’t a fling.” Her face paled at his announcement, a warm spread of satisfaction encompassing his chest at his admission and her reaction.

Gina pulled herself together then strolled toward the kitchen, saying over her shoulder, “Good. More reason for you to fork over what I want and end the stalemate between us. I need coffee. Come back with my money.”

“Not going to happen, Gina.”

Brett didn’t follow her, instead, stormed out with his suspicions radar on high alert. Gina’s act didn’t fool him. He knew her well, and that one spasm of unease crossing her face was enough for him to put a tail on her for now.

He wouldn’t take any chances with Allie’s safety.
