Pam’s now hopeful tone tore at Lily’s conscience, but she held firm. “No, but don’t...”

“Thanks, Lily. That means a lot and all I wanted. Have a good weekend.”

She hung up before Lily could warn her about instigating any chance encounters and started to text her when her phone pealed with a call. Seeing Delia’s name, she sighed, wishing she could get on with her day without dealing with anymore odd behavior from either her ex-best friend or her building friendship with Delia who used to be a casual acquaintance before John died. At this rate, she would never be able to put him and those years behind her.

“Hi, Delia. What’s up?” she asked, hoping to move her along.

“Good morning. Want to get together tonight, maybe watch a movie? I can bring something to eat.”

“I’m sorry, I can’t. I have a date.” Sort of, if she counted Reed’s invite to join him at Casey’s tonight as a date.

“Hey, good for you. Anyone I know?”

Everyone in the area had heard about the Kincaids despite Casey’s sons keeping a much lower profile than their playboy father. It would be only a matter of time before news of the middle brother in a relationship got around. “Maybe not know, but you’ve heard about his family. Reed Kincaid.”

“John’s partner?”

Lily was surprised she knew that and at the disapproval in her tone. “Yes,” she replied without further comment that would keep her on the phone. “Maybe another time. I gotta get started on chores and shopping. Bye.”

“Have fun. Bye.”

Shaking her head at having to deal with the odd behavior from both Pam and Delia this morning, Lily hung up and went to start coffee. She needed a large cup this morning.

Chapter Eight

Reed drew a beer fora customer while keeping watch for Lily. He’d been tempted to call her all day, find out for sure if she planned on joining him tonight at Casey’s, but he wanted this decision to be hers after he’d gone to her place unannounced last night. Taking his brother’s advice about Lily had been the smartest decision he’d made since hearing she had returned. He’d enjoyed sitting and watching a movie with her as much as he had bringing her to orgasm, a first for him and an evening he wanted to repeat over and over again. When he pictured himself twenty, thirty years older trying to solve a whodunit with her, he welcomed the idea. Slade would run away from a woman who threatened his solitary life, and Brett had tried, fought his attraction until he almost lost Allie to their exes’ schemes.

He had already spent years longing for Lily yet doing the right thing by not acting on his attraction. Not only because she was already committed to someone else but because that someone else was his friend and partner. When their relationship had fallen apart followed by John’s unexpected death, Lily had needed to come to terms with that loss. Once fate tossed them together again at the charity auction, he found it impossible to stay away.

Now, the solution seemed so simple. Reed wanted her, and she showed signs of returning his feelings, leaving nothing standing in the path of him pursuing the relationship he’d desired for so long.

“Who do you keep watching for?” Brett asked as he and Allie stepped up to the bar.

“Am I that obvious?” Somehow, that didn’t bother him anymore.

“Pretty much, yeah,” Allie answered for Brett as she slid onto a stool. Leaning forward on her elbows, she teased, “Have anything to do with your visit to Lily’s last night? I must say, I was disappointed you were home before midnight instead of this morning.”
