Jamie put his hands on his hips and took in a calming breath. “We’re about to find out.”

There was a knock on the door and Jamie left the lounge to answer it. We watched as he opened the door. Detectives Cameron and Brooks walked in with two cops in uniform right behind them.

As soon as Detective Cameron saw me, he reached behind him and pulled out cuffs from his back pocket. “Maura Quinn, you are under arrest for the murders of Tom Morris and Christina Barker,” he said and forced me to turn around so he could cuff me. “You have the right to remain silent…”

“What proof do you have that she killed them?” Jamie demanded, because he knew for a fact that there was none.

“We found an email sent from Maura to Miss Barker threatening to kill her and Tom Morris if Miss Barker didn’t stop the affair they were having,” Detective Brooks said.

“That’s bullshit,” Louie growled.

I huffed a laugh, drawing everyone’s attention. I only had eyes for Brooks. When the corner of his mouth lifted, I knew he could see in my eyes that I had pieced it together.

Detective Cameron started ushering me out of the lounge. I spared one last glance at Louie. “Your little pet loves you.” His eyes narrowed in confusion and as I was walked out of my house into the backseat of the detectives’ gold sedan, all I could do was trust that he would eventually understand.

“I don’t think we need an escort back to the station,” I heard Brooks tell the two cops they had brought with them as he rounded the car. “We got it from here, guys.”

Taking Brooks’ word for it, the two cops got into their squad car and drove off before us. As Cameron climbed into the driver’s seat and Brooks into the passenger’s, Cameron frowned at Brooks, but didn’t say anything.

We were about five minutes from my house when I let out a dramatic sigh. “Tell me, Antony—you don’t mind me calling you Antony, do you?” I didn’t wait for an answer. “How long have you been working with my mother?” It was too much of a coincidence that he had done nothing with the file on my mother I had given Dean and that my mother had left photos from the night I’d been raped in Stefan’s study the day she had broken into the manor.

Through the cage that separated the front seats from the backseat, I watched Cameron give Brooks a confused look. “What?”

Brooks didn’t respond. Instead, he pulled out his gun and pointed it at Cameron.

“What the fuck, Brooks?” Cameron growled, completely shocked.

“I’m going to need you to turn left up here,” Brooks said to him.

“You know, she could have just told me where to meet her instead of writing a fake email and framing me for murder,” I said.

“And risk your family following you?” Brooks said as he stared at me through the cage. “And the email may be a fake, but we both know you killed your ex and his side piece.”

I didn’t bother denying it. “You didn’t answer my question. How long have you been working with Riona? Since before or after you sent Dean to infiltrate us?”

“Did Stefan kill my brother?” he snapped.

I didn’t react. I kept my face schooled. “You mean after he raped me.”

Brooks seethed, “Lies!”

Cameron let out a curse.

“I know the truth,” Brooks insisted. “I know you lied. You lured my brother into a bathroom to have sex, and when he turned you down, you got mad like a spoiled little bitch and went to Daddy crying rape.”

I threw my head back laughing. “Oh, you poor thing,” I said with a condescending smile. “Riona has twisted the story in a nice little bow for you to accept, hasn’t she? Would you like to know what really happened? Hmm? Your brother and his friend cornered me in a bathroom at a party. His friend held me down while your brother shoved my legs open and raped me on the bathroom floor. He left bruises and bite marks on my body. I was seventeen and a virgin and your brother ripped away my innocence like it was his to fucking take.”

Brooks stared forward, refusing to look at me.

“If you don’t believe me, ask Riona for the pictures. She was there that night,” I said. “Honestly, I wouldn’t be shocked if she was the one who put your brother up to it.”

“Shut up,” he said, still refusing to face me, but I knew I had planted the seed of doubt in his mind.

For the rest of the ride, Brooks told Cameron where to drive until we were pulling up to the warehouse owned by my family on Stone Street.

“Recognize this place?” Brooks asked me.

I didn’t respond.
