“Wow. I’m right. You’re undercover. I’m so proud.” Her voice rises several octaves. It could be a play at drama or it could be genuine. “Wait. So…you’re going to make my wedding, right? I mean, obviously if you need to thwart an evil empire from a nuclear bomb attack, that will take precedence, but otherwise, you’ll be at my wedding, right?”

“Yes.” I visualize the vacation request form I submitted prior to leaving for Canada. “In the absence of a nuclear bomb threat, I will be at your wedding. But the events leading up to the wedding…” I let my voice trail.

“Right. I understand.”

Does she? I’m not sure she does, but she watches a lot of action movies andSEAL Teamis one of her favorite TV shows, so maybe she does.

“So, how are the men? Do they look like your old security team? What was that one guy’s name? Fisher?”

Fisher’s name coming out of her mouth has me grinning. But then I think back to my class at both Quantico and Langley, and yeah, they aren’t all like Fisher. It’s a mix of aesthetics, because that’s what the companies need. The better someone can blend in unnoticed, the better for the company.

“Trust me. They don’t all look like Fisher. But enough about that. Tell me all about the life of a fiancée.”

She bubbles over with wedding planning ups and downs. They have the most important elements done. The venues, the band, and obviously, each other. But she’s struggling with dress, color theme, and menu.

The ringtone from my work phone sounds down the hall.

“Lauren, I’ve got to run. But just know I love you. And I’m so grateful to you for yesterday. You. Are. Awesome.”

“So are you. Call me when you can. And try to visit me before you leave California!”

“Will do! Love you!” And with that, I end the call, throw the phone down on the bed, and rush to my office.

I answer on the fifth ring, barely catching it before voicemail.

“Hello?”

“Hey, girl. Can you be ready in thirty?”

“Minutes?”

“Yep. I’ve got a surprise.”

“Sure. What should I wear?”

“Something comfortable. I’m in leggings, sandals, and a comfortable top.”

That sounds like yoga, but something tells me that’s not surprise-worthy for someone like Gemma.

“I’ll be ready.”

In a flash, I dress, then lob a call to my dad on my personal phone. I get his voicemail but leave a message.

“Hey, Dad. Just calling to say hello. Tell Ava and Justin I said hi. I’ll try to reach you later. Love you.” Justin is my younger half-brother, and if I were to guess, he and Ava are off at a sports event with him this morning. It seems their weekends are becoming all about Justin.

After locking away my personal phone, I shoot off a note to the CalTan team notifying them I’m going to spend the day with Gemma again, then write a note for Fisher.

Leaving with Gemma. She says it’s a surprise.

Will have my phone with me.

Love you,

Sophia
