“Sophia. Everything okay?”

“Yeah. We’re driving—”

“Down to LA, I know.”

Of course he does. “Right. So, listen. You owe Fisher an apology.”

“Excuse me?”

Fisher casts a side glance my way and shakes his head three times quickly, telling me no.

“You punched him.”

“Sophia.” It’s the dad voice.

“Dad.”

“He’s significantly older than you.”

“You’re getting morally righteous now? The man who dated my therapist?”

“Don’t talk to me like that. Fisher looked out for you when you were a child. It’s sick. He has no business dating you. You deserve better.”

“Dad.” This time I soften his name. He may never understand, but he doesn’t have to. “I love him. And he loves me. We’re going to be together whether you approve or not.” I glance to Fisher. He’s gripping the steering wheel so hard his fingers are turning white. “But I’d rather this not cause a rift between us.” Fisher glances at me when I use his word. “But it’s in your court.”

“Fisher’s with you now?”

“Yes.”

“Tell him I’ll see him when he gets to LA.”

“Dad.” I say his name with an authoritative, warning tone.

“I’ve got to run. I’m about to land. I love you, sweet pea. Be safe. Be smart.”

A dial tone sounds. I check, and yes, he ended the call. And there you have it, ladies and gentleman, Mr. Jack Sullivan.

“He hung up.”

Fisher reaches for my hand and intertwines his fingers with mine. “I’ll talk to him.”

I don’t tell him that that’s exactly what Dad said. I’m twenty-five years old and both my father and Fisher are acting like I’m not the key player here, when in actuality, this is my life. Dad doesn’t get a say. And Fisher…it’s frustrating. He should just back me. He should fight for us.

“Just give him time, Sophia. He’ll come around.”

“And if he doesn’t?”

He turns those dark blue eyes on me, darker in the cabin of the vehicle, and turns the world to rights. “He doesn’t have a choice.”

CHAPTER34

FISHER

The only room available on short notice is a bungalow on the edge of the property. It’s actually ideal for us, as there’s an exit to the street. It also cost a small fortune, but my partner doesn’t care if Uncle Sam covers the expenditures.

I’m a saver and an investor. I’ve done well, partially due to a lifestyle where I hoarded pay and spent little for years. But, as she pays cash for the room, it occurs to me I’ll need to perfect the blind eye when it comes to her spending. We might be able to justify reserving a room here given our targets are here, but something tells me she won’t submit the expense. She does hand over the credit card that’s in Sophia Garcia’s name but gives specific instructions that she'd rather pay in cash.

In the room, she makes contact with Gemma. The plan is for them to meet for a drink in the lobby, then go to some exclusive restaurant where Gemma managed to get reservations. She’s already sent the name of the restaurant to the team. We’ll have surveillance on them, but we’re most interested in Rafael and who he’s meeting with.
