“We were hesitant at first, but eventually he convinced me that he’d take a few shifts so we could save a little money, maybe get ahead. I never thought he’d kill him.”

I can see the pain etched on her face. It’s clear that she blames herself for her brother’s mistake. I want to tell her that it’s not her fault, but the words stick in my throat. Instead, I give her hand a reassuring squeeze.

“It’s not your fault, Daniella.”

She turns to me, tears brimming in her eyes. “But if we hadn’t come to New York, none of this would have happened. Angelo would still be alive.”

I pull over to the side of the road and stop the car. “Look at me, Daniella.” When she meets my gaze, I continue. “You can’t blame yourself for what happened. You did what you had to do to survive. And now, you're doing everything in your power to make things right.”

She nods, but the guilt still lingers in her eyes. I lean over and kiss her softly on the lips. It’s a gentle kiss, meant to comfort rather than arouse. But as our lips part, the kiss turns from comforting to heated.

We both seem to be lost in this moment, and I can feel my heart racing as we start touching each other. Our intimate embrace intensifies as I run my hands around her body, exploring every inch of her curves.

She responds eagerly, pressing herself against me and sending waves of pleasure through my body. The moment seems to last forever, but reality soon catches up with us when she reaches for my zipper.

The spell is broken.

I pull away slightly to look into her eyes. Instead of seeing passion, all I see is fear. Fear that she’s made a mistake by trusting me with her secrets. Fear that she’s betrayed the memory of her brother by giving into temptation.

Fear that we won’t make it out alive.

I take a deep breath and slowly release it before speaking. “Daniella, we don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do.”

Her shoulders relax slightly at my words and I can see that she’s relieved not to be judged for her desires. I lean forward and give her another gentle kiss before starting the car again and continuing our journey back home.

“Thank you,” she whispers.

“We’re in this together,” I say, trying to lighten the mood. “We’ll take down Giorgio, and then we can move on with our lives.”

Daniella nods, and for a moment, we sit in comfortable silence. The sun has set now, and the sky is darkening. We’re almost home.

As we pull up to the house, I can't help but feel a sense of dread. I know the dangers that come with being involved with the mafia, and I can’t shake the feeling that something bad is going to happen.

But despite all this, I can’t help but feel a spark of hope. For some reason, I find myself wanting to stay alive and explore these growing feelings between us.

I know that Daniella feels the same way too. She’s been through so much in the past few months, and yet she still finds the courage to smile and push forward.

In that moment, I realize that no matter what happens, I will do anything to protect her and make sure we both come out alive.

CHAPTEREIGHT

DANIELLA

I openthe windows to let in the cool night air while Marcello spreads out a sheet with a map printed on it on the table. He smooths the top corner of the map and gets on his knees.

I sit next to him, my eyes on the markings on the paper, but Marcello’s powerful arms flitter into my peripheral vision. The powerful fragrance of his cologne pulls me in.

I want to lean in and kiss his lean cheeks and caress his powerful arms, but instead I make myself concentrate on the map. His plan of making our operation look like it's coming from Don Paolo seems sound. I truly don't care how Don Giorgio goes down I just want to put the man and his interference in my life behind me.

“We start here,” Marcello says as he points at the base of the map.

My eyes trail to his long, slender fingers, and I imagine him caressing my body. It’s a struggle to focus on the map.

“From this point, we cut to the spot where they are most vulnerable.” Marcello’s finger zips across the map.

“Umm, when did we get to that?”

“Looks like you haven’t been paying attention.” He turns to face me and his green eyes looking at me like that make my heart jump in my chest.
