I planned my great escape from the mafia. I had to if I wanted a chance to make better decisions. But I’m two years ahead of plan.

I hold Daniella with my good hand, urging her to run faster. The last thing we want is to fall into Giorgio’s hands. Because he’ll kill us on sight. He won’t care that I’m his flesh and blood.

My black Suburban is still in the underground garage by the time we get there. A wave of relief hits me as we approach the car. I'm happy this place isn’t crawling with Giorgio’s men yet.

“Come on,” I urge Daniella. She’s panting harder than ever, and I can tell she’s tired of running. We are a few steps away from safety.

“I’ll drive,” she says when I head toward the driver’s seat.

“Sure? I can manage.”

“You don’t need to manage. We’re in this together.” She breezes past me and jumps in the driver’s seat. I turn around and jump inside the passenger’s seat. “Buckle up.”

The SUV jerks forward and swerves violently away from its parking space. It bursts through the garage door and gets on the road.

I glance back through the rear windshield and see a fleet of vehicles outside my house. No doubt that’s how Giorgio’s men got here and surrounded the place.

Daniella continues to step on the gas as we put more distance between us and the house. I look in the side mirror and see they aren’t giving chase. They may not have even realized yet that we’ve gotten away. I smile at the thought of Giorgio’s men trying their best to blow up that escape door, thinking we’re cowering behind it.

“Damn, that was close,” I mutter.

“I’m sorry, they ruined your house.” Daniella gaze flicks from the road to me. “What’s next?”

I touch my wrist, and pain strikes me again. Not bad, though. I’ll take a potentially broken wrist over getting caught by Don Giorgio Bernardi. But that was close.

“I need to make a few calls. Then we need to end this shit and leave New York. What do you say? Are youreallywith me?”

“Yes, if it means putting this behind us.”

“Then it’s time to rework our plan and get the fuck out of dodge.”

CHAPTERTEN

DANIELLA

Marcello parksin front of a wooden cabin house surrounded by weeping willows on either side. We have been in the car for almost three hours, stopping only once to put a twenty in the tank and switch drivers.

“This should do until we map out a better plan,” he says as he holds the door open for me.

“Looks nice.”

He nods and gestures forward. I walk on the lush lawn, heading to the entryway. After Marcello unlocks the place, we walk into the front room, nothing but the yellow light from a single giant bulb illuminating our path. I look around the cozy, rustically decorated room and settle on the couch.

“Make yourself comfortable, I’ll be right back.”

“Okay.”

More significant in my mind is the fact that we are likely being followed. It won’t be long before these monsters find out our location again. We need to perfect our plan quickly and leave. It’s funny how finding something to live for other than revenge is changing my priorities.

Marcello wants to explore what we have and honestly, so do I. And it’s more than the sex. It’s the man.

“Here.” He passes me a bottle of water.

“Thank you. Is this your place?”

“Nah, belongs to a friend, Tristano. He and his wife, Aurora, let me stay here from time to time.” He reclines next to me, and I instinctually lean closer. “It’s a place I come when I want to spend time with nature.”

“Who could ever imagine a tough man like you bonding with nature?”
