“I’m happy we’re getting a chance to fix things,” I finally say.

Daniella stares at me blankly, as though she has no idea what I’m talking about. I’m pissed that she had to take off before we could talk about us before, but I figure this isn't the time to complain. I’m getting the second chance I want.

“You mean a lot to me, Daniella,” I say as reach out to stroke her hand with my fingertips. “Being away from you like this let me realize how much I want you in my life.”

“Or you miss the sex?” she whispers.

“Well, I do. But that’s not all there is to us. I miss talking with you, watching the moon together, laughing together. The little things. I found out how much they matter once you were gone.”

Daniella purses her lips and nods.

“I have closed my heart to love for a while, because I figured loving a woman would put her in the line of fire. No one I love is safe. I mean, hell, my parents have to stay hidden in a remote town in Turin.”

Her face softens, and her hand losses some of its stiffness underneath mine.

“I have always loved you, Daniella. The first time I saw you, I felt something and with each passing day, that thing grew and grew until it became a wide chasm I can’t fill without you in my life. I need you. I want you back.”

Daniella sighs and locks eyes with me again. “I love you too and you know it. But I’m concerned about that relationship is headed nowhere.”

“It’s headed somewhere for me. Once I finally get Giorgio out of the way, we’ll be able to fully concentrate on our love.”

I pull her closer and press a kiss on her lips. She smiles into it and returns it.

“I was worried something might have happened while I was away,” she confesses.

“But you didn’t check on me?”

“I was protecting my heart,” she says softly

I peer at her face, at how innocent she looks. She has every right to protect herself from heartbreak. And going forward, I want to keep her heart safe. I make that promise to myself now, but I want to make sure I can promise to her in the future.

We walk to the car together. Her brow furrows when she sees the bags packed in the back seat.

“You left the cabin already?”

“Yeah, why?”

“Have you come up with a plan? Is that why you’ve come back?” She looks confused and I want to put her concerns to rest.

“No, I was already on my way out when you contacted me. We’ll talk about it when we get somewhere safe.”

As we leave the park, my mind is swimming. I don’t know where we are headed yet. With Daniella next to me, I’m not ready to set up a stake out next to Giorgio’s house right away. This is the time to take things slowly, and enjoy her company while I can.

CHAPTERTHIRTEEN

DANIELLA

Marcello ison the phone with some guys while I file my nails in the seat opposite his. I know Marcello wants to end this now, but why doesn't he want involve me?

He just finished speaking with the fourth guy, and his face is glued to his phone’s screen. Honestly, I don’t know what he’s up to now. He hasn’t told me anything. I’d have gone ahead with my plan, but I had to break the news of the pregnancy to him first. And because he’s willing to take responsibility for it and loves me, it seems I’ve been put on the sidelines.

I mean, of course he's been making lots of plans… I just want to be a part of them.

“Hey, Tito, I need your to help find out when Giorgio will be out of the club tonight,” he says as he paces the room.

His brow furrows and he pauses mid step, as if Tito’s response is unpleasant. “What do you mean? I'm not making you a part of anything. Just tell me when he’s gonna get out of that club. I’m not asking you to put a fucking gun to his head.”

Judging by the firmness of his voice, I can tell Tito doesn’t want to help. Damn. And this guy is supposed to be his friend. So much for that. After the call ends, Marcello stands by the window for a while before walking toward me.
