“I don’t want you to be a part of this fight anymore," Marcello says, sitting next to me. I turn to look at him in amazement. I didn’t expect him to actually come out and say it like this, but I guess it’s good that he’s communicating with me about it at all.

“You know how important this is to me,” I protest. “I won’t let him get away with what he did just like that. I’ve come too far to back out.”

“I’m not asking you to give up your revenge plan,” he replies. “Just stay out of this for the sake of our child. That’s what all I’m asking.” Our gazes are glued to each other, and I see the concern in those glassy green eyes of his. Marcello isn’t the type to worry about anything too much, so I’m certain he’s being like this because he doesn’t want to lose his child.

I look away, peering down at my booted feet. “You’re afraid, aren’t you…”

“I never really thought about having a kid because I can’t imagine losing one. Now, that I have one on the way, I’ll do anything to protect it. Please, all I’m asking is that you allow me handle it. After all, we both have the same goal. To see the end of Giorgio. Please, let me handle it.”

He wraps his arm around my shoulders, then kisses my temple. “Please.” His voice softens, his face growing somehow more serious as he waits for my reply.

“The pregnancy is a few some weeks old,” I tell him. “It’s still safe at this point. So I won't let that stop me from going ahead with my plans. I’ve waited for a long time to get a shot at this. Don’t take me out of this fight, not yet.”

He looks away, as if finding it hard to consent to this idea. It’s the truth, though. I won’t let my current state hold me back. I’ve come too far for that to happen.

He gets up and walks to the closet. “Ever used a gun before?” he asks as he punches some buttons on a panel inside the closet as he speaks.

I get up walking toward him. My mouth opens when the panel opens, revealing a secret shelf. All manner of guns and weapons lines the shelf like an armory. I haven’t seen a spread like this in, well…ever.

“Oh my God!” I turn to stare at him, and he grins.

“Ever handled a gun before?”

I nod my head. “Yes. A Glock 19. Wait, how did you get all this? And if you have all this, why do we still need outside help?”

His upper lip curls in a smile as he sets a rifle on the bed. “I’m sorry I didn't let you closer in on this sooner... I’ve feelings for you for a long time. But I’ve been afraid I might not be good enough for you. If this got messy, I didn’t want to lose you. Giorgio is crazy. If he gets his hands on you again, you won’t be alive to tell the tale. You have to understand that I was being cautious to protect you.” He walks up to me, kisses my forehead, then my lips.

I nod gently. “I appreciate you keeping an eye out for me,” I say warmly. And I do mean it. It’s sweet, even if it set me back. At least it set both of us back, and not just me.

“You’re welcome.”

“So now you believe the two of us are enough to take him down, huh?” I tiptoe to reach his height, then kiss him briefly. He wraps his hands around my waist, smiling with a glint of mischievousness.

“If I wanted to protect you when you weren’t pregnant, why do you think I won't now that I know you’re carrying my baby?”

My brows crease. “So, we’re not working on this alone, then?”

He shakes his head. “No, we’re not. I’ve reached out to Liam and one other guy. They're already spying around the club.”

“Who’s Liam?”

“He’s a good spy and an excellent shot. His sister was among the girls I set free. We’ve been friends since then.”

“That’s fortunate.”

He nods as he passes a holstered pistol to me before sliding another holstered gun into the front of his pants. He then slips a knife inside the ankle of his boot. He slides on a black beanie, drops several loaded magazines into a bag that he throws over his shoulder, and then reaches for the rifle.

“How long have you been gathering all this?” I gesture to the shelf.

He raises his shoulders in a shrug. “Since the day I decided to get rid of him.”

I shake my head slowly. “All this for one man?”

He chuckles darkly. “Giorgio isn’t one man. He has tons of crazy guards. You can’t call such a person one man.”

“But I’m sure you must have been alone with him on several occasions. Why not just poison him?”

“Not possible with Giorgio.” The man is too damn cautious.”
