I frown. “I don't get it. Is he immune to poison?”

Marcello steps out of the closet and slides the panel closed.

“If you serve him a drink, he makes you drink it first. And when he serves himself, he empties his glass before going near anyone. He protects what he puts in his body like it’s his life.”

My feet are glued to the ground, and a kind of fear I have never before flooded through me. What would have happened to me if I’d gone ahead with my plan?

“Ready?”

I nod, hooking the pistol in its holster in the waistband of my pants then slipping mags into my pockets. “Ready.”

Just as I’m about to leave the room, he pulls me back into his arms, kissing me passionately. “Please. Be careful,” he says.

I nod. "Of course.”

CHAPTERFOURTEEN

MARCELLO

Daniellaand I get out of the car in at dusk. There’s a bulge under her shirt from the pistol she had slipped there. A look at her face tells me she’s ready for action. Her eyes are blazing, and her lips are pressed together. Every attempt I have made to dissuade her from coming along has failed. She’s hurting for revenge and won’t take no for an answer. If I weren’t so worried for her safety I might find it admirable.

“Let’s go,” I wave her over, and she hurries along to join me.

We enter the hotel and ask the receptionist for room twenty. That’s where Liam and the other guys await our arrival. I hold Daniella’s hand, feeling the wetness of her palm as we get on the elevator. I’m not the only one who’s nervous apparently.

“You can still stay here if you don’t feel up to it.”

Daniella faces me, her eyes sparkling. “It doesn’t matter how I feel. Angelo must be avenged.”

There’s a scary finality in her tone. She knows what she wants, and she’s going after it, no matter the cost.

“Fine.” We don’t exchange any more words until we get to the room.

There’s a No Smoking Sign on the door, but Liam has a fat blunt between his fingers. The interior of the room is hazy with smoke. Liam gets on his feet when he sees me. His eyes narrow almost drunkenly, but he smiles in recognition. The other men in the room nod and murmur hellos as I step into the room.

“I thought you would never show up,” Liam says. “Most of his boys have left to deliver something. This is the perfect time to strike.”

“Yeah, we’re ready.” I glance at Daniella, and she gives an assured nod. She twists her hair into a bun and pulls out her pistol. Talk about being battle-ready.

Liam opens the ammunition box on the table and hands guns out to the men. My anger mounts as we prepare to go out to face Giorgio. I feel the rush of adrenaline start sweeping through me.

“Have you briefed them?” I ask Liam.

“They know Giorgio well enough, but you can tell them anything else you want.”

I step into the center of the room. “This is a fight to capture one of the deadliest men on this side of New York. Keep your eyes open and be ready to fight hard. Giorgio might have some surprises up his sleeves. Be ready for anything. I know the back channel to get in and the good thing is that he won’t be expecting us through that route. That’s the surprise factor and we have to use it to the max.”

One of the men twists his mouth in thought. “You don’t think he would have blocked that loophole since he knows you left him?”

“He never knew I was aware of that entrance.”

The man nods and runs his hand down the barrel of his rifle.

“Who has questions?”

The room is silent. I look at Daniella, but she’s not looking at me. Her eyes are focused on her pistol. She’s gazing at it like a crystal ball.

“All right. Let’s do this. We’ll lay low for now, then unleash our power when we get into the blind spot.”
