“You were in the direct line of fire?” Ace sneers in disgust.

“No, asshole, he got off one shot. It clipped me before I took him out,” Talon replies bitterly. “Fucker.”

“We should have been there.” Major cuts his eyes to Ace.

“Not much you could have done differently. We had it covered.” I take my shot, enjoying the burn sliding down my throat.

“One of you coming home with a bullet wound isn’t having it covered.”

“Flesh wound,” Talon corrects Major. “You two are the dumbasses that got yourselves hurt.”

Major glares at him a beat then cracks a grin. “At least my story includes Colombian gang members. You let a street dealer get the jump on you.”

“Bullshit, that bullet ricocheted off this wall of steel.” Talon gestures to his stomach.

The mood in the room shifts with a few mumbles, then Ace points at me. “Your girl is anxious.”

My muscles tense, thinking of my conversation last night, glancing between him and Major. “Whose fault is that? You’re the asses who told her I was coming home before I could let her know.”

“You’d have caved, too, if you saw the heartache she was carrying around.”

Guilt claws at my skin, knowing I’ve kept her in the dark on this trip. “I’ll take care of it.”

“You better before she gets zits, goes bald, and packs on the pounds.”

“What the hell does that mean?”

When he and Major retell the story from last night, all of us toss back another shot at the supersonic sperm comment.

“Then Jewls peed on herself and all was well,” Major finishes.

“Thanks for getting her home.”

“No problem.”

“Sorry about not being around this weekend to help you move.”

“Given the chance, I’d be hauling ass out of here, too. It’s a few loads, we got it.”

“One more.” Talon refills our glasses and slides them to us. “Our last night all together in this house. Dropping like flies, but happy for you, brother.”

We down the liquor, all exchanging a look. No more words are needed.

I dip my chin, grab my bag, and make my way to my room. The light from the bathroom is on, giving me a view of Rowan curled into herself on my side of the bed. The scent of her lotion floats in the air, filling my senses. I forego the shower, stripping and crawling in behind her.

She jars awake, turning to me. “Ford?”

“Someone else in my bed with you, we have a problem.”

Her body twists, the lamp clicking on. Her hands come to my cheeks, her eyes scanning over me. “You’re finally here.”

“Yeah, baby.”

“I thought you were going to call me when you got close.”

“Didn’t want to wake you.”

Her mouth crashes down, her tongue curling with mine. I thread my fingers in her hair, slanting for better access. The taste, the smell, the feel of her in my arms, and all the pressure from the last weeks seep away.
