“You’re one to talk,” Robbie accuses his friend.

“I locked that shit down immediately.”

“Then you almost fucked it up.”

“My situation was different. I’d been shot. Not to mention, you are the king of royal fuck-ups. Ember should have left your ass—”

“Enough with the soap opera whiplash. What the hell is going on?” Talon loses his cool.

“Rowan didn’t come home last night. Her phone was turned off. She wasn’t home when I got off shift this morning.” I relay the information that’s been eating me inside. “Robbie can track her security app.”

“You know where she was?” Talon asks Robbie.

“She was with Cruz and Alex.”

I rock back at the information. “How?”

“She stopped by Clyde’s and something happened. They took her home with them.”

“What could have happened?”

“Not my place to say.”

“Is she okay?”

“Why aren’t you asking her? Aren’t you friends?”

“It’s complicated,” I repeat.

He studies me, his lips twitching. “Uncomplicate it.”

“Sounds like sage advice.” Talon chuckles. “Been trying to push that myself.”

“Not asking for advice.”

“Tough shit.” Robbie pulls out his phone, scrolls a few times, and flashes the screen to me.

My head pounds and my vision turns red. Anger rages through my bloodstream at the picture of Rowan, surrounded by firefighters. She’s holding a leash, laughing. Her smile is radiant and eyes are bright. The men around her are glued to her beauty.

“What the fuck is this?”

“That was an hour ago.”

“Whose dog?” Talon asks casually.

“Cruz and Alex adopted last weekend. They’re like crazy new parents. That lucky girl hit the jackpot.”

“She’s cute.”

I cut my eyes to Talon, wanting to knock the knowing smile off his face.

“Back to my advice,” Robbie continues. “When Alex and Cruz get involved, it’s a sign. I don’t know what happened, but they have claimed her. They're fiercely protective, which I know from firsthand experience. Time to man up. Uncomplicate things before she is out of reach.”

“Man, you know what she went through and what I’m up against.”

“What she went through is in the past and, to my understanding, she’s been healing. This picture is proof the only thing you’re up against is yourself. You procrastinate much longer, it’s on you.”

“We done?”
