“You may need to take a minute, too,” I tell her, taking in her flushed appearance and swollen lips.

She backs away, but I grab her hand, bringing it to my lips. “One month. The nights I’m on shift, you stay at Cruz’s. Then I want you in my bed every night.”

She flashes me a shy grin on her way out that has me twitching to haul her ass to my truck and take her somewhere no one can hear her screaming my name.

My eyes fly open at the vibration coming from the nightstand. The pitch darkness of the room and the continuous buzzing set my nerves on alert. Calls in the middle of the night are never a good sign.

I roll out from under Rowan, making my way to her bathroom. Once I’m dressed and my bag is packed, I shoot off a text to Talon.

“Go back to sleep.”
“What are you doing?” She reaches out, gripping my shirt. “Why are you dressed?”
“Have a situation with work. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
Her body knifes up and the light from her lamp snaps on. She swipes her hair out of her face. “Work? What’s wrong?”
“Don’t know. Need to get home and get briefed.”
“I’ll go with you.”
“You can’t, babe. This is confidential. Go back to sleep. I’ll be back as soon as possible.”
