“Enough. You know my allegiance lies with Pops. Are you telling me it shouldn’t?”

“Are you saying you would pick him over me?” I ask, surprised by his word choice— allegiance.

“I’m not saying that, but we all know you have been off lately.”

“He sent me on a job the other night,” I inform.

“And that’s not unusual. Sometimes he asks us to do things by ourselves.”

“Fucking rarely,” I add.

Pops knows we work better together, cleaner.

“What did you find?” Kenzo asks.

“It’s more what the hit said, but yes, what I found too.” I place the paperwork on the table with the stack of photographs and keep the other to myself until I decide how to tell them that he is also planning our take down, so it seems. He leans in and studies the evidence. His nose scrunches, and his brows narrow when he sees the images laid out before him, his eyes shooting to mine as he pulls them closer.

“I know her.” His words surprise me because I didn’t expect him to know anyone in these pictures. Apart from the one man we killed—the detective. “She’s been to Pops’s place.”

“Did you say anything?” I ask. “Clearly, she’s underage.”

“I did. Pops told me she was there for her boyfriend.”

“Her boyfriend’s father, who we killed. Detective Jack. He knew all about Pops,” I reply.

“What did he know?” He leans in. “All I see is evidence that Pops likes his women a little younger. It’s disgusting, and we should fucking chop his cock off, but that’s Pops.”

“He sent me there to kill the man because he was going to expose him,” I tell Kenzo.

“And?”

“Fucking hell! We don’t clean up his messes. We’re paid to do other things. He is using us now.”

“He probably is.” He shrugs.

“You are fucked, you know, that right? We do at least have some standards but by the sound of it you don’t?”

He leans in and places his hands on the table. “Why are you on this righteous kick? You need to get off it. We kill. We have no remorse. End. Of. Fucking. Story.” He locks eyes with me. “It’s the girl, isn’t it? Oh, actually, this started happening before her…” He pauses, waiting for me to respond. When I don’t, he continues, “It’s funny when you think about it. You were probably the darkest of us all, and yet here you sit, worried about what Pops is doing.”

“It’s wrong.”

“What we do is wrong,” he points out. “You stomp on people’s heads to kill them, but not before you kiss them. Is that somehow, right?”

“You’re missing the point. We don’t kill kids. Even we have our limits,” I remind him.

He shrugs. “And for all you know, this is fake.”

“You just said you saw her with him. Plus, there are pictures,” I argue. “You should be on my side, not his.” Fucking hell, I want to tear my hair out right now with this conversation. How is he riding so fucking hard for Pop’s right now.

“I am.”

“Why did that not sound convincing?” I ask as Nancy walks in with our food, ending our conversation.

Not long after that, Kalilah walks in slowly and sits between us at the table. Nancy returns and places Kalilah’s plate down and smiles before she goes back to the kitchen.

“Did you request pancakes again?” I ask Kalilah.

“Yep. Chocolate chip today,” she chirps.
