She wants me out of her bed.

Out of her house.

Out of her life.

But I'm not going to fight her on that.

"Okay," I tell her. "Whatever you want."

I just wish that 'whatever she wanted' was me.

Chapter seventeen

Evan

Mymomiswaitingon the porch when I show up on the porch the next morning, sitting on her swing with a cup of coffee in her hand. Sam drops me off without ceremony; the only one who actually says goodbye is Alex.

Then they're off, driving back out to the road so Alex can go to school while Sam goes to work.

And I'm...

...fuck me.

I'm pissed.

Not at Sam--at my mom, because shehas tohave said something that got Sam all rattled. I stalk toward the house, my backpack over my shoulder, and my mom watches me with clear eyes.

"Mornin', Evan," she says.

I don't reply, going to open the door.

"You're not going to say hello to your mother?" she says.

I pause, my hand on the door, and I grit my teeth. Then I turn to look at her.

She looks sosmall--more frail than when I was growing up, her hair still short from chemo a few years ago. I never came to visit her when she had cancer.

So that's the question...am I pissed at her, or at myself?

My shoulders slump. "Mornin', mama," I mutter. "Is there enough coffee for me?"

"Should be," she says. "But we can brew another pot. I think we've got a lot of talking to do."

"We really do," I agree.

I walk inside and put my bag down inside the front door, and then I pour myself a cup of coffee before I join her outside again. She's watching the birds flit around the birdfeeder hanging from the porch, her eyes darting over to me as I sit down on the porch swing beside her.

"You're here early," she says.

"You knew I would be," I say.

"I suspected," she replies.

I frown. "What the hell did you say to her?"

"Nothing she shouldn't have already known," my mom shrugs. "You didn't tell her you're leaving town again."

"It wasn't a sure thing."
