"That kid is smart as a whip," Eli agrees. "And he's very intuitive.

"Oh my god," I groan, putting my head in my hands.

"He might know, but you need to be honest with him," my mom says. "So, when are you going to make it right with Sam?"

"I don't know," I say, feeling my shoulders slump. "But I feel like she didn't want to see me at all today. I either need to give her space, or talk to her before it's too late."

Tasha hums. "Let me chat with her tomorrow," she says. "We're supposed to get coffee, and I'll see what's on her mind."

"Don't tell her we talked," I say. "I just...I want to deliver the news myself. I have to know how she reacts."

"It won't leave this room," Sadie says.

"Love lovelove!" Lyra shouts.

"Okay...maybe it will leave this room," Sadie laughs. "So you'd better hurry up and talk to her."

Chapter twenty

Sam

"Lovelovelovelove!"

Lyra bounces in the highchair next to our table at the local bakery, Sweet Treats, as me and Tasha sit down for our weekly coffee date. I peer over at Lyra and smile, leaning close.

"Somebody learned a new word, didn't she?" I ask.

Tasha looks a little bashful. "Yeah...she sure did."

"Love?"

"Mmhm," Tasha laughs. "I've been watching a lot of sappy romance movies lately--guess she picked it up there."

I chuckle, taking a sip of my latte. "Well, it's a good word to know, right Lyra?"

Lyra giggles and nods, her curly hair bouncing with her movements.

As we chat and catch up, I can't help but notice the way Tasha keeps glancing down at her phone. It's not the first time she's done it either. Something's clearly bothering her.

"Everything okay?" I ask.

Tasha sighs. "Honestly, Sam...I'm a little bit worried about you."

"About me?" I ask, trying to brush it off. "Why?"

"Because of that guy you told me about," she says. "The one you hooked up with who turned out to be kind of a jerk. You seemed so secretive about it, I just...I don't want you to get hurt."

"I won't," I say, shaking my head. "And I just--I didn't want to tell you who it was because you know everyone in town."

"So I know him?"

"Yeah," I say.

Tasha stares at me. I feel like she already knows something, and I blush.

"Of course you know him," I murmur. "He's your brother-in-law."

She lets out a whoosh of breath. "Oh, I'm so glad you told me."
