"Have you been in love before, Evan?" she asks.
I shake my head. "You're my first, darlin'."
She sucks in a breath and nods, biting her lip. "You're not mine," she whispers. "You're okay with that, right?"
I nod, reaching out to touch her face. "It's one of the things I love about you. That you didn't just give your whole heart to one man...you gave it to your kid, too. And now you're offering it to me? That's a lot of love for one person to give."
Sam clears her throat. "I know it's early, but…what would you think about spreading that love around a little bit more?"
I frown, wanting to believe what I think she's about to ask. "I'm not sure if I get your meaning."
"Do you want kids?" she asks.
"Yeah," I say, my voice rough. Fuck…I've been fantasizing about knocking her up, and this is just…it's too much to hope for. "I really want kids."
"Me too." She covers my hand with hers and turns her face to kiss my palm. "Will you take me to bed?" she asks, a blush coloring her cheeks.
I nod.
"Gladly."
Chapter twenty-three
Sam
Myheartispoundingas I lead Evan down the hall, my skin tingling everywhere we touch. It feels like I can finally start to hope--and that scares me, but it also makes me giddy.
Like I'm falling in love.
I'm fallinghardand I want the man I love.
I turn around and put my arms around him as
we stop in the middle of the hallway. Evan's eyes lock onto mine and I can see the desire swirling in their depths. I take a deep breath and lean in to kiss him.
His lips are soft and warm against mine, and I feel myself melt into his embrace. He deepens the kiss, his tongue exploring my mouth as he pulls me closer against him. I can feel his hard body pressing against mine and I moan into his mouth.
We break the kiss, gasping for air as we look into each other's eyes. Evan's hand reaches up to cup my cheek and he leans in to kiss me again, his passion growing with each passing moment.
I can't believe this is happening.
I've wanted to have a partner again for so long and now he's finally here.
I wrap my arms around his neck, pulling him even closer to me as we kiss again, our bodies pressed together in a gentle yet urgent embrace.
I know that this is just the beginning of what will be an incredible life together.
Ialsoknow that, at this rate, we won't make it to the bedroom.
"We have an audience," Evan breathes against my lips, laughing softly. I glance over to see the dogs gathered at the end of the hall, and Kona's tail starts to thud when I look at him.
"Right," I say. "Bedroom?"
He nods. "I'll do you one better."
He bends over before I know it, then he's scooping me into his arms. I squeak and laugh as he walks to the bedroom and carries me over the threshold, and he kisses me again as he closes the door behind us with a kick of his foot. We're both a little tipsy and drunk enough on love that we're grinning like idiots when he puts me down and walks me toward the bed.
"So about having more kids..." he starts, and my breath hitches. "When do you want to start working on that?"
