And Evan knows that.

"David was my brother's best friend," Evan says. "I wish I'd have met him, and I wish he was still here--even if that means I wouldn't have you. But because he's not, I'm going to do everything in my power to make you happy and give you the life you deserve."

He looks over at Alex and beckons him forward as he kneels. "Alex, I can't replace your dad," he says, and I start a whole new round of crying as I watch them. "But we can have a relationship of our own, and we can honor him. Chance?"

Chance steps forward, and I see him pull something out of his pocket. I cover my mouth when I see what he's holding: David's watch, the one I gave to Chance five years ago. Chance passes it to Evan and Evan clasps it around Alex's wrist. I don't know if Alex understands what this means...but I do.

Evan stands, then, and he takes his ring from his older brother, Caleb. I haven't seen the wedding band yet, and my eyes open wide when I catch a glimpse of it.

And a whole new round of tears starts.

Because inside is David's ring, with a silver and diamond band designed to match.

"Sam, I can't replace the man you loved," Evan says, "but going to spend the rest of my life making you happy, and I'm going to carry the responsibility of helping you have the life you wanted with him. I love you, Sam, and I promise to love and cherish you for the rest of my life. I promise to be there for you every day, to support you, to comfort you, and to make you laugh. And I promise to always honor David's memory, to keep it alive in our hearts and in our home."

I can't speak, can't even nod, but Evan knows me well enough to know what I'm feeling. He pulls me in for a hug, and I wrap my arms around him, feeling the warmth and comfort of his embrace. I know that he will never replace David, but I also know that he will always be there for me, through thick and thin, through laughter and tears.

And as we exchange rings, I know that I have found my happily ever after.
