"You seem tense."

"Like I said, that's the point," I breathe.

Evan doesn't do anything; he just draws circles on my skin, right under the hem of my shirt, on my bare skin. No move closer, no move to kiss me or touch me...but this is enough to drive me crazy. I wonder if he knows how wet I am right now.

Ihopehe doesn't know.

"I don't mean to be forward," he says quietly. "You know my mama; she didn't raise me to be anything but respectful."

"Right, of course," I whisper.

"But how about...what if I just held you," he says, his voice rough. "Too tired to do much of anything else."

Even the suggestion of 'anything else' makes me shudder, but he's right.

We should take it slow. I'm tired, this could just be a day of work getting to me. I don't want to do anything I can't take back.

"Okay," I say quietly.

Evan comes closer, and I do the same. I rest my head on his chest as he holds me close, his hand still on my hip, fingers stilling.

I go to sleep fast, even though my heart is pounding.

And it feels...right.

Even with David's ring still on my finger.

Chapter six

Evan

There'sabeautifulwomancurled up against me, and she's murmuring my name when I wake up in the early hours of the morning.

Sam's hair is fanned out across my chest, having fallen out of her braid in rich black waves. Her brow furrows as she breathes in and out. At some point in the night, her hand slid under my shirt, and it rests on my bare ribs in a way that makes me think of doing somethingless than respectable.

And...I have fucking morning wood. Which I should have expected, but is still pretty damn inconvenient.

I try to edge away from her, but she holds on tighter. Her voice gets a little disturbed as she talks in her sleep, clearly dreaming.

"Please don't go," she whispers.

I try to be calm, not to let her know just how turned on I'm getting from the simple act of touching her. I make another attempt at moving her arms, but her nails dig into my skin.

"David,please don't go."

Fuck. Her husband--the husband I'm disgracing right now by sliding into bed with her while she's tired and emotional. I wince and feel myself getting a hold of my arousal, finally extracting myself and slipping away.

This was...well, it was obviously a mistake.

But we've just got one more day of traveling together, then we can go our separate ways.

We hit the road again early in the morning, leaving Lucille and Tom behind with a friendly wave. I call my mom up as Sam drives us up the coast, toward Oregon, into the mountains. It'll only be a few hours, and the dogs are anxious to get some good running in once we reach the shelter.

"Evan!" my mom says, picking up after just a couple rings. "It's so good to hear from you, honey. Been a while!"

"Yeah, it has," I tell her, a note of apology in my voice. My mom has a lot of kids--and at this point, she's got a running count on grandkids, too--but I've been gone a while and I don't come home to her often. "Sorry about that."

"It's okay, honey," she says. I can hear a child laughing in the background--one of my nieces or nephews, for sure. "What's going on? Where are you right now?"
