"But if itwas--"

"It's not," I blurt out with a laugh. "Dude, I just met you a few minutes ago and you're already trying to get me in trouble."

Johnny laughs and shakes his head, taking another swig of his drink. "Sorry, man. I just like to have a little fun."

"It's all good," I say, grinning. "But seriously, Jenny and I are just friends. She's engaged and happy. I'm happy for her."

Johnny nods, his expression thoughtful. "I get it," he says. "Sometimes you just have those people in your life who you always click with, no matter what."

"Exactly," I say, feeling a sense of relief that he understands. "And honestly, I'm just happy to have her back in town. It's been great catching up."

"Well, you'll have plenty of time for catching up now that she's back for good," Johnny says, clapping me on the back. "And who knows? Maybe there'll be a chance for something more in the future."

I raise an eyebrow at him. "Dude, I just said she's engaged."

He snorts. "My name isn't Playfair for nothin'. We'll see how the night goes."

Chapter seven

Jenny

Theweddingmakesmecry like a baby.

Sam has been through so much. She was a war widow, and she was a single mom for a long time, and now she's found love and it's...

...it confirms for me that love is real.

So by the time the ceremony ends I'm crying because I'm thinking about Sam and everything she's been through, and I'm thinking about Steven and how I feel. All my emotions for him come rushing back seeing this beautiful display of love, my heart aching that he isn't here with me.

He's such a good guy.

I want to make him happy for the rest of his life.

All of that seems to fall away, though, when I run into Finn after the wedding. Everyone is hugging and laughing and taking drinks from the bar as we prepare to welcome the bride and groom to the reception, and Finn looks incredibly handsome in his suit. He comes over to me, his face falling when he sees the tears streaking my cheeks.

"I'm sure my makeup is ruined," I laugh.

"Not at all," he says, grinning. "You look beautiful. The vows got to you?"

I nod. "Of course they did! You had to have felt it too, right?"

"I might have shed a few tears," he chuckles, putting his hands in his pockets. "Can I get you a drink?"

"It's an open bar," I scoff.

He shrugs. "I can stillorderit for you. I mean...you're my date, aren't you?"

I feel a pang of guilt in my chest as I remember Steven. Finn notices the change in my demeanor and clears his throat awkwardly.

"Right, sorry. I didn't mean to overstep. We're just friends, after all."

I shake my head, "No, it's okay. I'd love a drink. Thank you, Finn."

We make our way over to the bar, and Finn glances over at me. "You still a beer girl or do you prefer wine now that you're a city slicker?"

"Still a beer girl," I laugh. "And you know I'm trashy so..."

"Bottom shelf?" he says.
