"But it doesn't make sense," she says.

I frown. "What doesn't?"

"This," she says, gesturing between us. "This is so crazy. You don't even know me anymore."

"We know each other better than anyone else knows us," I say. "You're my best friend, Jenny. We can do this. We can make it happen."

"What if we're making a mistake?" she asks, her voice filled with regret. "Shouldn't you think about this, give it some time--"

I cut her off, placing my finger against her lips. "I am thinking about it. I've been thinking about it for years."

She sighs, burying her face in my chest. "Give me some time," she whispers. "And then...I'll give you my answer, okay?"

It hurts, but I know this isn't the end. I may have rushed her, but I'm fucking infatuated.

"Okay," I say. "And if you decide not to...we've still got our bargain, right?"

She nods and smiles. "Yeah. We've still got our bargain."

Chapter thirteen

Jenny

Iwassupposedtovisit my wedding venue today.

And I still am...just not with the guy I expected.

My mom is surprised when I tell her I still want to visit the old renovated barn by the lake north of Fern Hollow, given that I handed over my engagement ring day before yesterday. Still, she doesn't ask too many questions until we're on our way, glancing at me every so often to gage my reaction.

Of course...that'swhen the questions start.

"So things are back on with Steven?" she asks.

I shake my head, looking out the window. "No--definitely not."

I've been fairly private about my budding love affair with Finn, even though my mom keeps asking how I'm doing. Still, I think she gets the idea--because a small smile ghosts over her lips.

"Odd to visit a wedding venue when you aren't engaged," she says.

"I'm not...notengaged," I murmur.

Her eyes dart over to me.

"Eyes on the road!" I hiss.

She laughs under her breath. "You must be a very popular girl to have already gotten another proposal."

I laugh with her, biting my lip. "It's actually a really old proposal from a long time ago."

Her eyes widen, but she keeps them glued to the winding mountain road. "Finn?"

I blush and nod. "Are you mad?"

"Of course not, dear," she says. "I always thought the two of you were meant to be--your dad, too, even if he doesn't ever say it."

"But it's not a sure thing," I tell her. "We're just...thinking about it. Talking."

"So that's where you've been the past few nights? Not spending the evenings with Sam?"
