"I know, I know," I say, nodding my head even though she can't see me. "But what if he doesn't want to get married? What if he never did?"

"Then you'll deal with it," Sam says simply. "But don't assume the worst until you've given him a chance to explain himself. This is moving fast, and I know better than most that sometimes all you need is to open up communication. Breathe, Jen."

I take another deep breath and try to let her words sink in. She's right--I shouldn't be so quick to assume the worst. I need to talk to Finn and find out what he's really thinking. And maybe I need to slow down, too. Take things at a pace that's comfortable for both of us.

"Thanks, Sam," I say, feeling a little more grounded. "You always know how to make me feel better."

"That's what friends are for," she says. "Now go call Finn and figure this out. And let me know how it goes."

I end the call and take another deep breath, steeling myself for the conversation ahead. It's not going to be easy, but I know it's necessary. I need to be honest with Finn, and he needs to be honest with me. Whether or not we end up getting married, we need to be able to trust each other and communicate.

I pick up my phone and dial his number, my heart pounding in my chest. But it just...rings.

It makes my heart ache.

Memories of Steven ignoring my calls flood back to me.

I hang up and put the phone down on the table when it goes to voicemail, trying to stop myself from crying. I don't want my parents to worry, but this week has been so tumultuous...and now Finn isn't talking to me.

I've destroyed my whole life.

And now I have to start picking up the pieces.

Chapter sixteen

Finn

Myheadisstillspinning when I pull into my parents' driveway, my hands gripping the steering wheel tight.

Jenny told Sarah we were getting married.

Sheset a date.

And I'm...

I'm shocked, I think. But I'm also happy. Like...so happy that all I want to do is drive to her house and sweep her up in my arms and kiss her and kiss her until I can't anymore.

I'm marrying my best friend.

She seemed so reticent, but now she'saccepted.

I grab the beers I bought on my way here and I walk up to my parents' house, where the whole family is inside cooking. Tasha sits and chats with my mom at the kitchen island while Chance plays with my niece in the living room, and my dad is at the stove. My mom looks up at me when I walk in, and Tasha follows suit.

Everyone goes quiet.

"Uh...hi," I say. "Something wrong?"

Tasha crosses her arms and raises her eyebrows. "Do you have something to tell us, Finn?"

My mom nods. "Something to do with a certain childhood friend...?"

I sigh and put the beers down on the table, scrubbing a hand over my hair. "Sarah talked to you?" I ask Tasha.

"She sure did," Tasha says. "Or...Jake talked to Chance, and Chance talked to me. You know how it goes with a big family."

"What an idiot I was not to assumeeveryonewould learnallmy secrets," I mutter, slumping to a seat at the dining table. "I mean...you already know, so there's no point saying anything."

"But it's true?" Mom asks. "You're marrying Jenny?"
