My family nods in agreement, and Tasha pulls out her phone. "Let me make some calls," she says. "I know a florist who can put together something beautiful for you to give her at the park."

I smile gratefully at her. "Thanks, Tash. You're the best."

"No problem," she says, already dialing a number.

As the rest of my family starts to make plans for the engagement, I can't help but think about Jenny and how much I love her. How much I've always loved her, even when I didn't know it. And now, as I plan to propose to her, to spend the rest of my life with her, I feel like I'm finally coming home. Like everything I've ever wanted is within reach.

"Thanks, guys," I say, standing up from the table. "I'm gonna go call Jenny and see if she's free tonight."

I head towards the door, but my dad calls after me. "Hey, Finn."

I turn around, curious. "Yeah?"

He grins. "Just remember...no matter how long you've known someone, there's always more to discover. And that's the best part."

I grin back at him as I head out the door, my heart in my throat. There's just one more thing I need to do before I go back home--before I call Jenny and ask her to meet me at the Snowcap tomorrow, the last night before the ret of my life.

I head downtown instead of back to my place, and I find a single light on at the Lius' restaurant. The light in Jenny's old room is off--so I guess she must be asleep--and the open sign is turned off, too. Still I go up to the door and peer inside...and I find her parents at one of the tables in the restaurant.

I grab my phone and peek at it, only to realize it's dead.Shit; it must have lost all its battery on my drive up.

But I can charge it when I get home.

Jenny's father sees me a second later, and he glares at me as he comes to the door. I try to steady my breathing, rolling the velvet box over and over in my fingers, as he opens the door.

"Jenny's asleep," he says. "And she's very upset."

"Why?" I ask, my eyes wide. "I--shit, did I do something wrong?"

"Language!" Mrs. Liu calls from the table.

"Yes, you did," her dad continues. "You've been ignoring her calls."

"I haven't," I say. "My phone is dead."

Mr. Liu's shoulders slump and his stern look fades. "Fair enough," he says. "Do you want to talk to her? She's asleep."

"No...I actually came here to talk to you," I say.

Mrs. Liu turns around in the silence, and I see her eyes sparkling. She must know something--and it makes me feel a little more brave, a little more excited for what's to come.

"What could you want with us?" Mr. Liu asks, though I think theybothknow what I'm about to say.

"Well, Mr. and Mrs. Liu," I say, my heart in chest. "I've come to ask for your permission to propose to your daughter."

Chapter seventeen

Jenny

There'ssomethingtobesaid for going home and staying with your mom and dad.

I wake up to the sensation of my mom sitting on the edge of the bed, a comforting hand on my shoulder. She knew I was upset when I went to sleep--of course I was, given that I dropped a bombshell on Finn and he proceeded to drop off the face of the earth--and I can still see the look of concern in her eyes as I blink in the dawn light.

"Good morning, dear," she murmurs, her voice soothing and calm. "Are you okay?"

I bite my lip, forcing myself not to tear up. "Not really."

"Well, I know you were distraught last night," she says, "so I wanted to tell you first thing--Finn came to talk to us last night."
