I chew on if I should tell her. She always wished me and Jenny would get together, and she knows everything--about the kiss, the promise...

The promise that we would get married if we were still single at thirty.

Which I guess is null and void, since Jenny's getting married to some other guy.

Steven.

"Jenny's back in town," I say quietly.

Mom's eyebrows rise. "Is that so?" she says.

She doesn't keep talking. I look sideways at her. "I'm sure you have opinions about that."

She shrugs. "I ran into Linda at the farmer's market a few days ago and she mentioned Jenny was coming home. Did she tell you she's engaged?"

I nod slowly. "Yeah, to some guy named Steven."

"Hmm," my mom hums, handing me a glass of wine. "Well, I'm sure she's happy. You should give her a call, though. It's been too long since you two caught up."

I take a sip of the wine, nodding again. "Yeah, I should."

My mind races back to high school, to all the times Jenny and I would stay up late talking about our futures, about the possibilities that lay before us. We made that promise to each other as a joke, something to keep each other hopeful during the tumultuous teenage years.

But now, it seems like everything has changed.

"Come on," my mom says, putting a hand on my shoulder. "Let's go back outside and enjoy the barbecue. You can tell us all about what's been going on with you."

I grab the spare glasses and my mom gets the wine, and we head back out to join the family. Tasha and Chance are chatting with my dad now, their daughter Lyra running around and laughing her head off. I can't help but think about how this will be Jenny soon, married and having kids of her own.

"Hey, bud," my dad says as I come out with Mom. "What kept you?"

"I ran into Jenny Liu downtown," I tell him. "We ended up chatting for a bit."

"Oh, yeah--your mom mentioned she's getting married," he says.

Am I the only one who didn't know?

"Jenny was Finn's best friend from high school," Tasha tells Chance, filling him in on the details. "Her parents own Jade Garden."

"Oh," Chance says. "I didn't know you were friends with their kid. Really nice people."

"They are," I nod. "And yeah...I spenta lotof time there growing up. We had a designated homework booth after school."

"They were so adorable," Tasha says, looking back at me with a sly smile. "We always thought they would end up together."

"Don't rub it in, Tasha," Mom chides.

"I'm not!" she says. "I'm just saying..."

"Well, now she's getting married, and I'm happy for her," I mutter.

"Are you though?" Tasha asks, raising an eyebrow.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, you seem awfully preoccupied with her getting married," she says. "Do you still have feelings for her?"

I feel my face flush. "No, of course not. We're just old friends."
