"Friends who made a marriage pact," my dad says, grinning.

I roll my eyes. "That was a joke."

"Well, it's not too late to make good on it," Tasha says, winking.

I shake my head, taking another sip of wine. "It's not like that."

"Sure, sure," my mom says, patting my hand. "We believe you, honey."

The rest of the night passes in a blur of food and laughter, but my mind keeps wandering back to Jenny. I can't help but wonder what her life is like now, if she's happy with this Steven guy. And if she's not, what is she doing marrying him?

Was she that anxious to get it over with so she didn't have to commit to me?

Fuck...it's such a stupid thought. I can't even remember the last time we talked about our little wedding bargain.

But the more I think about it, the more I wonder...and the more I realize I have to avoid her at all costs.

I gave up my chance when I acted like she was nothing more than a friend. And now that she's happy, I have no right to mess that up.

Chapter three

Jenny

Ialmostmanagetoforget about Finn as the wedding planning gets underway.

It's easy to get distracted with floral arrangements, possible dates, dresses and color schemes and menus. My mom is ecstatic that I'm doing all this, and I try my best to match her enthusiasm.

But something feels wrong.

Something big and looming.

I haven't talked to Steven in a few days, which isn't...completely weird. We like our own space, and he's traveling. But he usually tries to call, and with the wedding plans, I don't like not hearing from him.

Plus...

I keep running into a certain someone all over Fern Hollow.

I told myself I would try to avoid Finn because of everything that happened between us in the past--not that it was reallyanything, but it was also everything, and it was especially everything to me. But I can't seem to avoid him.

I deliver food from my parents' restaurant to his sister's house and he happens to be there.

I go back to visit the animal shelter where I used to work--to say hi to my friend Sam--and Finn justhappensto be volunteering.

He's everywhere.

I'm perusing the local honey offerings at the farmer's market on the Saturday after I get home when a big guy bumps into me from behind, almost knocking me over. The lady behind the table's eyes go wide when I lose my balance, and I think I'm going to tumble over--but someone grabs my wrist and catches me. I turn around to look at him, feeling like I'm the one who should apologize...

...and of course, it's Finn.

"Hey!" he says. "I am so--oh! Oh my God, Jenny, I didn't know it was you."

I can't help the smile that flickers over my face, my eyes meeting his. His strawberry blond hair has flopped down on his forehead and he has to whip it out of his eyes, a familiar gesture that I remember seeing thousands of times when we were kids.

I've really missed him.

Damn it.

"You're fine," I blurt out. "I was probably in the way."
